Great little cafe in some of the back streets of Kyoto. Coffee was some of the best we have had in Japan. Food was ok but definitely worth going for a coffee stop with a warm, quaint feel.

French style café that's simple with western breakfast menu and fairly good coffee. Thick slices of buttered toast with boiled egg or toast with scrambled egg and sausages, french toast as part of breakfast menu. Lovely cosy atmosphere, jazz in background with excellent and quick service. Mostly frequented by locals. Doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is.... More

Very simple but good food and quick service. Note the food here is grease but on a cold-snowing morning nothing better than this.. Coffee is ok. Prices are like any other places around the area, the set me us are good value for money. We really enjoyed it and left our plates empty..

Takagi Coffee is an old fashioned coffee shop in the center of Kyoto, near the financial district of Shijo Karasuma. Although it is an old shop, it is very comfortable inside, which recalls the good past times of Showa 40s. Their coffee is excellent. If you take it with lunch (there are variety of Japanese styled Western dishes), you pay... More

Would never have found this little gem without searching TripAdvisor. Much thanks. Inexpensive and great food and drip coffee. Really delicious eggs. Generous thick and fresh toast. Very tasty small sausages. Was initially going to leave them as often happens pleased I didn't. Great find, great service and much enjoyed.

My husband and I were looking for American-style brunch foods and he found this place right near out hotel. The owner and the cook were cute old Japanese men who served us promptly and politely. The iced coffee was delicious and the french toast was great - tasted like a funnel cake! We also had a ham and egg sandwich... More

Small shop, unfortunately smoking is allowed 😬 The owner seemed rather uninterested. Limited food menu

My foray into the world of kissaten started here at Takagi Coffee. To get there, get off at Shijo Station and walk one and a half blocks south, then turn left at the gas station. My grandparents used to own several coffee shops in Singapore. I would go to the Whampoa branch to visit my grandfather to get my secret... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
