After spending over a week in Japan and trying many different types of restaurants here including 3 star Michelin star Ryugin in Tokyo this by far was our favorite. The hospitality is unreal as most is in Japan.. I never would have thought to try a French restaurant in Japan but it came highly recommend from a foodie friend. Every... More

Three of us ate at this high-end French-influenced restaurant on a Thursday evening. We were the only diners at the bar and received exemplary service throughout. This included being escorted to the bathroom and waved goodbye at the end of the meal! The plates are very small, so be prepared to eat several plates in order to be sated.

A very unique experience. The quality of the food is exceptional. The service is superb. Every course is so tasty and so well presented, you will remember this restaurant for a long time. Chef INOUE Teruo runs this French Kaiseki restaurant with such personal care, pride and attention to detail, I'm not surprised that the food and service is so... More

My wife and I returned to this restaurant after a memorable meal in 2007. Sometimes your memory gets polished, but not on this occasion. We opted for a private room ( as last time). We opted for top degustation and accompanied with French champagne and a superb Chambertin Grand Cru. I only order these wines when confident the meal is... More

Misoguigawa was recommended by a friend and it came with fair warning that we would spend a pretty penny. Indeed, we probably spent about as much on dinner as we did for 3 nights at the hotel, but it was certainly worth it (and that included several adult beverages.) The kaiseki style is a Japanese/French fusion, and the chef takes... More

From the start to the end of our time in this restaurant we were treated as VIPs. Lovely welcome. We had a lunch menu which was beautifully presented as KAISEKI style. The Foie Gras and Duck were delicious. As was the Green Tea Brulee with Black Sesame Ice Cream. Planning to try the Dinner menu next visit. Fantastic service right... More

Every little details was exquisite- the serving, the staff, the decor, the seating, each and every dish and more so even the flavor- everything was delicious. A unique meal presenting French kaiseki with beautiful pottery and dishes. Highly recommended.

This restaurant in the well-known Ponto-cho Dori street has 150 years of history since they started business as "Chaya" in Kyoto traditional history and culture. Foods are integration of Japanese delicacy and French excellence. Nothing is ignored to make you feel comfortable and think you will come again for sure. Yes, it is a bit expensive here. However, you will... More

We decided to go a la carte at Misogigawa, as we had had some excellent kaiseki dinners in Japan already... We asked for the a la carte menu and were still given the hard-sell to do a tasting menu. After insisting on the a la carte menu, we noted it had no prices on it. Anyway, long story short...It took... More

Like many typical London families, we're a bit stupidly blase about eating out, as we're lucky to have probably the most cosmopolitan range of eating choices in the world. So when our friendly concierge in Kyoto (hats off, Granvia, great call) suggested this place we were ready to be moderately impressed, in that slightly English way. Misoguigawa is SO much... More

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
