Compared to almost anywhere in the world, eating out in Japan is comparatively expensive so if you want to try the more acclaimed restaurants you need to know you will have to pay. The great thing is most of them offer choices of set menus so you know what to expect up front and can choose how extravagant you want... More

Way back in the olden days, 2010, we ate here and had a wonderful time. Last time we sat at the counter and enjoyed some good cheffing action. This time we have a young family so we were given a private room. In the intervening 5 years there hasn't been any slippage in either food quality or service. In fact... More

Having dined over a good mix of tradition and more inventive set menus, this is best described as somewhere in between. Originally being given the recommendation to Wakuden's flagship restaurant, we weren't in touch soon enough for a reservation during our stay - but we figured something in the same chain would be worthy of a visit. We were right.... More

No doubt you have to try Kaiseki as the representative Kyoto main gastronomic meal, and defenitely you better go to a good one than a free buffet, however to me this does not enjoy me as the traditional niguiri-sashimi-traditional-food. Needless to say 15.000 yen it's quite an expensive option. Going in depth analysis to the meal and beverages, appetizers as... More

I know there are very few TA reviews for this place (we found this to be true in most of Japan ~ they just don't depend on TA so much); and I know that most of those few are glowing, which is what brought us here. But at $180 per person, we would expect more, no matter where we are... More

Ate at the counter - the only alternative is one of the private rooms. The fish is grilled in front of you, the sushi made as you watch. Other courses come from the kitchen. Everything beautifully presented and placed before you by smiling sushi chefs who do not speak English. We had saki - a Japanese word I knew and... More

Had the benhani set dinner at the Wakuden in the Eat Paradise section of Isetan. The food was tasty, but the waiting time in between courses was very, very, very, very, very slow even though it wasn't busy. For that reason alone, I won't be back.

This was one of the most beautiful and memorable experiences I've had in Kyoto. There are a few branches of Wakuden, and this particular one was convenient to where we were staying (The Brighton Hotel, about a 15min taxi ride). We had booked in advance as we were a group of 6. There was a private room available, which is... More

I went for lunch and got the most affordable setmenue option (6900) and saki.Total bill 8900. The fellow serving me took much care to explain the items it was almost heartbreaking. I would say, if subtle and exotic tastes are not your thing, go anyways!

We went to the restaurant on our last night in Kyoto. I must say the quality of food was excellent and loved the experience and interaction with the chefs who prepared our dinner and every details of the evening was so beautifully created. We had the 13800 pp course which is the second cheapest choice but it was very enjoyable.... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
