The architecture of this station alone is amazing. You can go up to to the top and walk along a viewing gallery for free to get a view over Kyoto. There are shops and places to eat galore. In fact this is one thing we discovered about Japan - the stations serve not only as transport hubs but also places... More

Cozy, quiet nice tea room with Japanese style. Good place to enjoy Japanese sweets or Tea. All sweets are traditional Japanese ones but slightly stylish and modern in my opinion.

With not too much time to wait for my train, I stopped off here, but need not have worried as, though very busy, the service was quick and efficient and my snack lunch of potato salad with shibazuka pickle thoroughly delicious, as was the local selection of beers to wash it all down with. Well recommended

After all my travels, around so much of Japan, I have to say, this is without doubt the best station I have visited. Everything is just a little bit better. Little bit cleaner, faster, more welcoming, efficient. Japan is an incredible country, I feel honoured to have been able to see so much of it. The shinkansen is wonderful and... More

Japanese are brilliant in mixing the old and new: A modern, high tech Kyoto station in an old city: Kyoto. No conflict with one another but a nice blend where tourists can appreciate the old, elegant beauty as well as experiencing the modern convenience.

Staying in Southern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.
