Unlike other reviews here, I'm not going to gripe about the price. 1) We knew when we made a reservation that this place was expensive and 2) It wasn't actually as expensive as some of these reviews would lead you to believe. We had the most expensive set menus (2 of us) a couple of drinks each, and a seafood... More

Unlike most of the restaurants we ate at on our recent trip to Japan where we spent 12 nights, Izutsuya was a last minute decision (we were craving more A5 rated beef!). We had originally planned to eat at Katsukura, but contacted Noriko, one of the concierges at the Westin, and asked for a recommendation. She recommended two restaurants and... More

Food, service and atmosphere was top notch. We were seated in a private room at a teppanyaki counter, such I nice surprise! On the expensive side (about $500 for two plus drinks), but worth every penny.

My husband and I had a great experience at this restaurant, but we paid around $235 American dollars for the 2 least expensive set menus that were listed. The room was great, our chef was friendly and spoke English and the staff was quite attentive. It was fun to watch our chef prepare all the courses and each dish he... More

I visited this restaurant with great expectations having read reviews online and in the press. I am sorry to say I didn't some away with them fulfilled. The food here is not bad; indeed, everything was tasty, well cooked by my own grill chef, simple in design and construction, which I like (including a salad course, a fish course, and... More

I made sure to have a reservation and came for the last spot to try out some very vaunted kaiseki. And I was not disapointed. The food were great and well prepared, step by step and with such miticolous care and passion.

We had an amazing dinner. We were seated next to the grill in a private room. The chef was very friendly and spoke English well. The fois gras with a Japanese omelette was the best I have ever had. The steak was delicious and perfectly cooked. The garlic fried rice was better than any rice dish I could imagine. Although... More

Unexpectedly, we were comfortably seated in a screened private room in front of a long table and grill surface. Our waitress and chef came and went, as they served and cooked our courses, beginning with sashimi, beef carpaccio & Parma ham over cellophane noodles, and pumpkin soup with cream. Being a "home chef" myself, I was mesmerized watching the chef... More

We had tried Kobe beef and wanted to give Tanba beef a go. This place requires reservations and they could only take us at 9pm. Good that they had English speaking staff to help with the phone reservations (I emailed and there was no reply). The chef rears his own cows and that's what you pay for if you order... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
