I was looking for a place to eat vegetarian udon. The minute I stumbled upon their facade, I was lured to try it out because it had a welcome sign for vegetarians. It was honestly tasty and the staff included a lady from Finland who have decided to stay in Kyoto after having studied in Japan. We had a nice... More

Stopped in a busy area (Gion) for lunch - amongst a long walk. This restaurant specializes in Udon - and curry Udon. I selected the Udon tempura (no curry) - and was't disappointed. A green tea, and glass of water provided free - plus a small paper crane as a memory. English menu. Very helpful staff. Thankyou.

came here about 2pm on a weekday afternoon, service can feel a little cold but I generally think that's more to do with the language barrier than anything else, I speak a minimal amount of Japanese and once I'd spoken a small amount staff opened up more. We mainly came here first of all because on Happy Cow it has... More

We came here for lunch and had to wait a really long time (perhaps it was due to the touristic season?) before we were seated. The service was impeccable and we didn't wait long to get our orders. We initially came here because it offers vegetarians options (6 of them), and it was extremely well rated, both on Tripadvisor and... More

Excellent udon place specializing in a curry udon. Not overpowering but subtlety rich and yummy. We got one chicken tempura and one pork curry udon. Both were great, but the curry was better. English menu and not a huge number of options, which I liked frankly. I wish this place had a branch in Detroit!

We came here as a fairly large group and everyone enjoyed their meal. We had a range of dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, fish allergy) plus people without any and all were easily accommodated. The food is very reasonably priced and the curry is very tasty. Its close to a bunch of shrines and attractions making it a convenient place to... More

We visited here for some quick lunch. To my surprise one of the waitresses spoke good English and the menus were also in English. This meant that I was able to order a ramen like katsu curry dish that was completely vegetarian. I'm not vegetarian but have struggled in Japan as I dislike fish and of course ramen has a... More

After struggling to find veggie food in Tokyo, this was a welcome find. We ordered three of the four vegetarian options and none disappointed. Great service. Closed its doors at 7.30.

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
