An interesting descent to this restaurant, ended with a lower than expected standard of cuisine. Disappointed with the quality of the dishes here, and the white wine was ghastly! That said, the service was quick, and the tuna and leek rolls were good. Would we return? Absolutely not!

Sadly they have removed most of our favourite items from menu one by one: first cheese crockettes, then kiwi sour and now their delicious pizza. Food is good but all the highlights are gone now so if you don't mind the noise then I would recommend to go to Torikizoku instead.

Friendly staff and nice drinks...à promising start...however....unfortunately that are the only two positive remarks I have....terrible low quality food (especially the meat). No return policy!

Great restaurant with English menu. On arrival we removed our shoes and were shown our seat that overlooked the bar which sat 2 other parties. It was cosy and out of the way. I think around the other side there might have been booths. We ordered the gyoza, yakisoba, a huge salad and salmon carpaccio. Everything was amazing!! The gyoza... More

Randomly walked in on our way back to hotel after a long day. Amazing food, great service and 1 litre of beer for about $9. Win/win.

This restaurant is situated across the hotel where we stayed, so after 3 days of exploring the food around town, we decided to have dinner somewhere nearby from the hotel. We picked Za Watami, and as we're eating we wished we had visited this place in the first day. Everything was good, the gyoza was a big portion of 10... More

It was so good we came back two more times. Ate a lot of different "Japanese tapas" which included great sushi, yakitori, wagyu (Japanese beef), gyoza dumplings and much more. Good size servings for a reasonable price (3-7000 yen for two). Service was quick and great. Recommended!

We went to the Za-watami on Karasuma Dori near Sanjo Dori and liked it so much we went back two more times. It is downstairs from the street, has a calm, quiet ambience, good drinks and tasty food. The prices are quite reasonable and the service is immediate and impeccable. Will go back again next time we are in Kyoto!

Za Watami is a restautaurant chain in Japan, also many restaurants in Kyoto with same menu. We was visiting Za Watami on Karasuma-dori in opposite of hotel Manterey. Restaurant is situated in ground floor of big office building. You must take off shoes as japanese style, but they have western style tables - so no problem. Food was great. And... More

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
