We only had something to drink so we do not know how the food tastes here. Unfortunately this is a place as most other places in Male, - all the tables are occupied of men who sit and smoke and drink, so I do not...like the atmosphere. But we sat inside where we were the only guests and enjoyed the AC.More

I went to Royal Garden Café for a dinner, with the expectation that it’s housed in a “rare surviving example of a ganduvaru, a nobleman’s house”. But apparently, the past glory has gone (presumably due to poor maintenance) and I don’t feel any nobleness at...all. The first waiter that I talked to seemed to have problem dealing with an foreigner. Maybe, in the dark garden without illumination, my face with unshaven beard has made him think I was a local Maldivian 😀 It also seemed to me that more locals than tourists come here. The good surprise was that it’s cheaper than expected. The seafood noodle came very much like “nasi goreng” including a fried egg at top. I guess it’s an ~Indonesian dish. I have asked it to be not spicy but it’s still a bit too salty for me. Nevertheless, with a price of Rf55 or so, I didn’t feel too bad 😅More

Didn't get to eat a meal, just snacks. Was part of the Sultan's Royal Compound, as evidenced by the intricate woodwork. Said to may have been part of the old dining area. Staff were quick and courteous. Planning to have a meal next time.

The restaurant is one of the best local food served in Male, closed to the Masjidh Al Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam. I've ordered Onion salad, grilled Chicken with white rice, and earlier water melon plate with lemon juice. The grilled fish was tasty with...BBQ sauce. The atmosphere in the restaurant looks very busy, and very traditional, maldavians handcraft is present all around. Great staffs Thanks.More

We had lunch at Royal garden during our Male tour. The food was delicious, the portions - generous, and the prices - fair. There's outside area were mainly local people sit and have coffee. The staff is friendly and efficient. Wifi is available.

The rice dishes here are the best it seems. They are generous and seemingly fresh. There is a good choice, as like may restaurants in Male'. There is an outside garden area, which is nice when it is not too hot, there are smokers there....The inside is air-conditioned and while a little dark, has an OK atmosphere. The service is friendly. I had soup and salad on this visit. There is no sign outside so difficult to find unless you are really looking.More

This is a great place to hang out and enjoy a meal or juice to pass the time by. Whether you eat inside or in the courtyard, this former nobleman's house will not disappoint. The menu is extensive--try the Sir Lankan dishes or the nasi...goreng, which is sublime. The staff here is very kind, attentive, and just plain sweet. I loved these guys. It's not far from the main water front and near Sultan Park so it's easy to find and worth it if you have luggage or are here for a short excursion. My favorite place in the Maldives.More

Set in one of the older style residential houses (i.e. within a walled compound), the Royal Garden is hardly conspicuous from the street, and one may pass by without noticing the activity inside. Inside, it is a sizable establishment with internal rooms that are air...conditioned. Then there is a large porch and finally the courtyard, all simply but comfortably furnished. The popularity of this eatery, especially with the locals become very obvious during lunch when the whole place is buzzing with activity, from the external courtyard to the cooler inner rooms. This is probably partly due to the strategic setting. Situated on Medhuziyaarai Magu (street), Royal Garden is across from some important ministries, the defense force headquarters and quality hotels. Although listed here as an Indian restaurant, the menu is more extensive, taking in local Maldivian and Sri Lankan cuisines, and even a splattering of western dishes like pasta, sandwiches, grills and the like. The place is also known for serving the local delicacy Garudia, a spicy fish soup that is accompanied by rice. The Indian and Sri Lankan dishes are usually spicy hot so may not suit everyone. The quality of the food is good though. The fresh juices, prepared as ordered are also good value. The ambiance is lively, the establishment clean and the service attentive and reasonably quick. Moreover, the prices are very reasonable. Royal Garden is worth a visit if you are looking to partake in some local dishes in pleasant (and local) surrounds.More
