Hill’s Cafe on S. Congress Ave is one of the iconic restaurants in Austin TX and has had an interesting history. It all began with Charlie Goodnight. As you enter you notice that chiseled into a block in the floor of the porch the words “Travis County Courthouse.” I don’t know why. Based on my investigation, since 1855 three buildings... More

Thanks for taking a trip down memory lane with us, James. We like to decorate our booths by dedicating them to Austin (and beyond) icons. I'm glad that the food was tasty, it seems like your group had a great sampling of the menu. You'll have to come back sometime to give some other items a try yourself! Best, Ellis More

I remember that we chose this restaurant due to good reviews on this web page and according to google. The place was quiet in the friday afternoon, however we had to wait our food a long time. The waiting time was not worth it, because the food was just lousy. Especially the catfish dish that I ordered was maybe the... More

Gubbe, I'm so sorry that the reviews didn't reflect the experience you had here. This restaurant means so much to us and to all of our long-time patrons -- I'm concerned to read your review. You shouldn't have had to wait as long as you did, so I'm going to make sure we're improving on the speed of service. Thanks... More

Was unexpectedly in the Austin airport as they moved my flight from San Antonio. Had a nice lunch there. Service was good as was the food. It is so nice when airport have local places for meals rather than the usual chain fare.

The worst dining experience that I have had in some time. Ordered fried mushrooms and the were very good. (although that mustard sauce is weird, the ranch is awesome). We then both ordered chicken fried steaks and my husband ordered his with mashed potatoes, beans and coleslaw ... mine with baked potato and mac and cheese. We heard a loud... More

Came here with a private party from out of town on a Friday night. There were barely any other people in dining room aside from us - guess word has gotten out that the food isn't that good. I've had BBQ in cities around the world and was looking forward to some authentic Texan fare. Food was served buffet-style so... More

My wife suggested this place; her parents brought her there often when she was a little kid. There was one large group but otherwise it was not busy. We had to search for the hostess, who put at a table adjacent to the restrooms. Either one leg on the table was a half inch shorter than the others or the... More

To me, this is one of those 'famous' Austin places that the hype overshadows the actual food. We were there for late lunch during the week so it was not busy. Our waitress was very nice and did a great job, although seemed very timid. She did keep our tea glasses full - which is important to me. We had... More

We were camping and met family to have Thanksgiving dinner. I had called in about 2 months before and made a reservation. The food was good and traditional plates with no substituting. You could order off the menu too. Some of it was not as hot as it should have been. The atmosphere was fun and in a good location.

I got to the airport a little early so I made my rounds to see what they had to eat. I stopped at Hill's Cafe and ordered an old fashion burger. From the bun to the meat, I felt I was at home with a home cooked meal! Again, not too bad for an airport fast food spot.

Once great - now really, really not good. I've been going to Hills for years. Been bringing folks to Hills for years, too. I work just about a mile away, so I've introduced many co-workers to Hills. No more!!! The "go-to" place is truly gone. I went with a coworker for lunch today. We both ordered my "usual" - chicken... More

A local South Austin hot spot since 1947, Hills Cafe has been serving up the best southern comfort food, steaks and BBQ anyone could ask for. An old Austin original with live music, catering, outdoor dining and large oak trees, Hill's Cafe is a destination for great food and fun! Did we mention a full bar and awesome drink prices?
