In the center of Nanjing street above the Number 2 subway line is one of the best authentic Chinese restaurants specializing in Hunan cuisine. The concierge at the Ritz-Carlton said this is where she comes to eat with her family. For a sumptuous dinner with beer and freshly squeezed orange juice our bill was $35. They have an English menu... More

If szechuan is my fav Chinese food, then hunan is a very close second. The fried spare rib and the fish head were excellent. Will come back for sure.

This restaurant is located deep in the heart of a big departmental store in Shanghai and one would not be able to find if you don't shop there or if you do not know the place. Being non local Chinese I have always wanted to saviour the different taste of China and am I not disappointed by being adventurous for... More

Food was very good. We like spicy food but not too spicy. We ordered a chilli beef dish. The dishes are rated with pictures of chillis from 1 to 4 The dish we ordered was a 2 and that was spicy enough for us. The staff do not speak alot of English but give you a menu with pictures and... More

Here you can order good (if not exceptional), reasonably priced, food from a picture menu on a tablet, while having some decent views over the old houses of Huangpu with Pudong on the background. The downside is that food might not be really hot and the windows are a bit too dirty. Generally it's recommendable as a solid, and easy,... More

South Memory (better known as Wang XiangYuan) is a chain restaurant with an emphasis on the HuNan style of Chinese cooking (one of the eight main styles in China). The traditional HuNan style has a recorded history of more than 2,000 years and its flavor tends to be chili spicy. South Memory serves a large variety of dishes that is... More

Food was very good as were the prices charged - lots of choice and good flavours. Service was very good and they provided a menu picture book with very good descriptions in Chinese and English. Seems to be a big hit with the locals which is always a good sign - very easy to find as it is accessed by... More

Nice restaurant easy to find on the top floor of the shopping centre. The food was super spicy. We had prawns on kebabs, squid in a wok, spicy beef and dumplings with two large beers and it cost 230 RMB. This food was enough for four people if with rice though! Would definitely recommend the prawns but the other two... More

Heard a lot about the famous boss and wanted to give it a try. It serves Sichuan cuisine with a modern twist. Fancy decorations and plating, but very pricey. Good for people who like quiet ambience. Service is good.

My favorite restaurant in Shanghai (actually two locations near my hotel - one on 3rd floor of 96 Plaza on DongFang Road and one on WeiFang Road). If you like spicy Chinese food, this is the place to eat. Get there well before 6:00pm to avoid big crowds and long waits.

Staying in People’s Square

Neighbourhood Profile
People’s Square
People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers. Shanghai residents, meanwhile, live and work in the many residential and office high-rises. While much of Shanghai stays busy late into the night, this really is an area that never sleeps with glitzy nightclubs keeping people up until the wee hours of the morning.
