Have been at this place for the second time. It's just in front of my Hotel (Charms) and hence, a great place to go on a rainy day, when you don't want to be looking for a taxi! Food was good and reasonably priced.

My wife and I ate here on our first night in Shanghai. Found it on TA searching for locations close to our hotel, and were interested in the opera. Food was nothing special and the bill was pretty high for the 5-6 dishes and two local beers that we had, but the opera was nice. There's no extra charge for... More

A went as a group and we were so lucky to had reserved a table near to the stage while we eat. It was a fantastic and cultural experience.I really enjoyed watching the live traditional Shanghai style opera performance on the night. The meal was delicious too. I loved the lively atmosphere and traditional and authentic decor around the restaurant.... More

Our tour group of 17 had its "Farewell Dinner" at this wonderful restaurant, which reportedly used to be the culinary home to the Chinese Mafia, and we can see why. The food was, from start to finish, simply magnificent. We ate dishes we had not been served in any other city in China. The dishes ranged from vegetarian to pork,... More

We asked the concierge of our hotel for a restaurant that was authentic without being intimidatinglyrics Chinese. The greeting at the restaurant assured us both qualities would be present, though we still managed to have enough mystery about our meals before they came despite photos of each dish and English descriptions . In hindsight we ought not to have ordered... More

Nice food, lovely setting. Variety of dishes and surprisingly different tastes. The atmosphere was very pleasant, really nice evening with good service and reasonable value.

Sounds like a tourist trap as it has a "dinner show" but that is a demonstration of Chinese Opera which is at least in tune with the city. The building is an old colonial building, enormous floor area but many private rooms for privacy. The food is outstanding (English menus available), have as many dishes as you can just to... More

The food is excellent but a bit pricy. But you get a beautifully decorated environment in 1920'/1930' style plus a dinner show with a medley of Beijing opera, Kung Fu performance and so on... During the show, it's very loud and almost impossible to continue a conversation, especially if your table has stage view. If you want to see the... More

As we entered I thought we had been transported back to the 30s. The whole thing shouts speakeasy and decadence. We were rapidly shown to a table and the entertainment started (Chinese Opera Wed - Sat - colourful, but an acquired taste), The food is excellent. We had goose (tender and well flavoured) and eels (rich and sticky), along with... More

Staying in Jing'an

Neighbourhood Profile
The heart of this neighborhood is the Jing'an Temple, while the main artery of excitement and entertainment is West Nanjing Road. Close to the Former French Concession, the area has a similar draw for foreign residents but displays a more commercial character. Large, flashy malls, luxe residential high-rises and trendy nightlife areas can be found along West Nanjing Road, but areas off the busy street have the same quiet cafes and independent boutiques that many people think of as distinctive of the Former French Concession. Jing'an is less encased in amber, though, and it's possible to immerse yourself more fully in the energy of China's most bustling metropolis here.
