Went there now several times and I was always pleased with the food and service which is well above the usual standard in Shanghai. It's a small place with 2 private rooms and a kitchen counter seating maybe all in all 20 seats. They only serve one seasonal set menu which is changing every full moon. Decor and Crockery is... I can't remember that last time I went to a restaurant where the presentation made me physically uncomfortable. Presentation of every single dish at Kappa Yu was somehow grossly overdone or over-large, often ridiculously so. Almost every single dish came with some sort of string or packaging to be undone or untied, which just got weird after a while. The... More

If you want to have unique Japanese food, do give it a try at Kappo Yu. The chef changes his menu every time when the moon changes into a full moon. The menu is a fixed chef tasting menu, which is my favorite part of a dining experience. There's no need to choose and be puzzled on what we should... More

Came here for the 10-course omakase menu that changes monthly. See accompanying numbered photos for the order of the dishes. We sat down in the tatami room and received warm hand towels to start. After ordering a bottle of bubbly the 1st dish came with a dramatic presentation since the abalone sat in a bamboo tray with dry ice. There... More

We have visited this place once and it was an upleasant time. Had to wait almost 30 minutes to get table and the food selection is scarce specially sushi plates. Not reccomended at all.

This Restaurant is run by a Japanese family and gives you the feeling to be in Japan rather than in Shanghai which is a real treat. Creative, personalized and high quality cuisine using multi-media presentation. Keep up the good work and we will be back.

The food at Kappo Yu is amazing! I was there for a birthday celebration, and we booked the tatami room. The restaurant is not very big; most seats are at the bar where you can see the chefs, and there are two small private tatami rooms. We were there when they served the 'Full-Moon Menu,'served only on the day of... More

Our ten-course dinner included such delicacies as Ginkgo nut mousse with sea urchin, steamed oyster with black truffles, apple compote with sake jelly, outstanding sashimi and sushi and Wagyu beef that melted on the tongue. The sequence, combinations and preparations were perfect, enhancing the wonderful flavors. It was an intensely pleasurable experience.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
