We went after a visit to Soong Ching Ling's Former Residence. It's but a 2 stop metro trip away. You guys can exit thru Exits 9, 10 to get closer to Xinle Road and the restaurant. We arrived about 2pm and there were only 2 tables occupied. The restaurant was clean with no hint of cigarette smoke, which was a... More

Excellent choice for original but tourist-compatible chinese dining with bilingual menu. Price level unexpectedly low from looking at it from the outside.

The restaurant is situated in the french concession, in the building of old church. The place is a little bit pricy, but the shanghainese dishes quite tasty. If you walk around it's a good place to eat.

We were taken here for lunch -it was crowded mainly with locals. Service is a little slow but it was very busy. Some of the vegetable dishes were excellent - the cauliflower, mushrooms, cabbage. Chicken in lemon sauce was disappointing - the sauce tasted artificial. The beef ribs with pepper and whole fish were excellent. Glass noodles were good.

I first was taken here in 2004. Through the years it has maintained it's standard of good food and improved it's premises to make it a must to go to. It is perfect for westerners who want local food. Not all staff speak English but you can get an english menu. If you want value for money this is a... More

Apart from the cigarette smoke filled room, the meal started out really well. We had delicious starter the red dates stuffed with glutinous rice were quite unique and went well with the cucumber salad. We ordered a kind of DIY pork bun dish which was, granted, delicious, but because it was heavy on onion, it was probably not all that... More

I was introduced to this wonderful restaurant through a friend who has lived in Shanghai for close to 30 years. She told us this was her favorite restaurant and has never been disappointed in the countless times she has eaten there. While the location has relocated from a small seedling venue, the restaurant has moved and grown as it received... More

I am visiting grape for many years now. it is a must every time when in Shanghai. I think its the perfect place to bring visitors as the food is local but still cooked that most westerners will like it. I suggest to try the prawns or the lemon chicken. The location itself is very nice in a old russian... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
