The last time we travelled to San Jose was quite a few years ago, prior to the hotel/restaurant’s renovation. Our memories were of the original intimate hotel, where we had previously stayed. The restaurant has transitioned to present an impressive old world setting. The service and environment were to be positively remembered. We had a most enjoyable evening, and were it not for one item, we agreed it would have deserved a 5 rating. The four of us started with appetizers - caprese confit and mushroom Napoleon. While not huge, were quite enjoyable. The surprise was the complimentary vichyssoise with smoke salmon - quite delicious. Two of our entres were pasta dishes - well prepared. The other two entres were the roasted Costa Rican pork. This dish would have been perfect, had not the tenderloin been a bit overcooked and on the dry side. It was this dish that kept us from the 5 rating. It was a restaurant you would want to return to. The service was comfortable, the setting relaxing, and all courses were presented well. We plan to return, as the we saw other dishes that we would like to try, and hopefully the pork entre was a one evening fluke. For four people, including drinks and desert, the evening cost came to $140 US dollars.

We went to the Grano de Oro on the 27th of December for a special occasion. We dined in the "outside" part of the restaurant and had a wonderful time. The service was attentive but not intrusive and we really enjoyed the ambiance. The restaurant has dining areas that are inside the structure as well as a courtyard which is surrounded on all sides by the hotel and restaurant structure. There is a fountain in the middle of the courtyard--it is a very pleasant place to sit. As you probably know, it can get chilly at night in San Jose and they have propane heaters loacated in the courtyard for that purpose. It is a white table clothe venue and the waiters are dressed formally. I noticed that some guests were slightly casual in their attire but most were trending to the evening attire side of dress. we did not sit at the bar but it was accessible from the courtyard or inside and very elegant. We travel to Costa Rica frequently and I have definitely found a new place to visit when I am in town!

Fabulous setting in a remodeled old hotel. The new part seamlessly blends into the beautiful old building. Also fabulous is the food. We had the macadamia crusted sea bass and the poached salmon. Totally delightful. The wait staff were friendly and helpful (in English since our Spanish is weak) Don't miss an opportunity to eat here.

We booked the hotel because we wanted to enjoy dinner there (& figured that the breakfast would also be good). We were mistaken.... For dinner, the cerveza app was tasty but unexceptional; likewise with the chateaubriand. The corvina was dry, rubbery, and tasteless. My bad for not sending it back; hence the two star instead of one star rating. Mixed drinks were also disappointing. Re: breakfast the next morning; another unfortunate experience...the staff knew that we had an early start and offered us a box lunch. But restaurant opened at 7 AM and we were first in line with 45 minutes before being picked up at the hotel (and maybe a few minutes leeway since it was a private transfer). We could have ordered immediately but weren't asked for our order for about ten minutes. Our straightforward order arrived at 7:40. We wolfed it down and met our driver on time but the meal was very inefficient and discourteous, (It did taste better than dinner.)

Exceptional restaurant in a lovely boutique hotel. Take a look around at the details-the furniture, the drapery, the artwork, the bespoke lamps. Then sit down and relax into first class service and a thoughtfully crafted meal. If they are offering the Chef Tasting menu which is several courses with wine pairing, I highly recommend it!! It was a Top 10 best meal in the world for me.

Beautiful place, with lots of dark wood and stained glass. We went for an 11 AM brunch and practically had the place to ourselves. We were greeted warmly, given water, and about 10 min. Later asked for our menu choices. I went with the Croque Madam (think fancy grilled cheese and ham), and my husband chose the eggs benedict with salmon. They both were out of this world. So good! After waiting for an eternity, we ordered a Creme Brulee that was one of the best I had ever eaten, including when we were in Europe. Besides the service, which was kind but practically non-existent, our water glasses sat empty, coffee cups as well, and the orange juice was not fresh. This may seem silly, but the little extras one enjoys in upscale dining make a difference. The ladies' room was spotless, but the bathroom tissue could easily be confused with sandpaper. We did appreciate that there was no "elevator music" and we could enjoy our conversation without distractions. We will definitely return. Their food is too wonderful to pass up.

Dishes use many local ingredients and flavors but also honor traditional fine dining. The food is presented and executed at a very high level. While not inexpensive, you are rewarded with everything you would expect for fine dining.

A very welcoming open courtyard in the center of the hotel mansion was a great place to have a Costa Rican breakfast and Costa Rican coffee before heading to the La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano area. Food was very good and authentic. I had the Huevos Rancheros and my wife had the banana pancakes. Yum!

This is only for the restaurant because we did not stay at the hotel. We had lunch here and it was lovely. We were quite early for our reservation and arrived during the break between breakfast and lunch but they offered us menus and spoke with the chef to see if he could start cooking for us so we didn't have to wait so long. We didn't mind waiting at all because it was beautifully decorated and so quaint. We looked at the old photos on the walls. The food was delicious ( I had the ravioli in a pumpkin sauce), my son had the steak sandwich and my husband had a french dish with duck. All the dishes were absolutely delicious! I would love to stay here when we are in San Jose again.

Incredible meal. From the moment we were seating in the grand wooded room overlooking the courtyard, we felt incredibly lucky to be dining here in such old world historic charmed environment. The staff was attentive and helpful and every course we incredible. We loved the ravioli bolognese which was better than Italy and the chicken breast was moist and fantastic. The wine list extensive and the deserts are wonderful. This is michelin quality at a fraction of the cost. The chef must have studied in Europe. For sure the best in Costa Rica.

We spent six days in Costa Rica and our best meal in the entire country was at this restaurant. We were staying at the hotel so it was an easy walk. I had the Lomito (pistachio encrusted steak) cooked medium rare and it was perfect. The atmosphere was also very pleasant in the courtyard. The only thing that detracted from the experience was that the service was quite slow. Slow to order and then the waiter never checked back with us to see if we needed anything. We would dine here again if we are ever back in San Jose.

Out of all the restaurants I've eaten at in the last 5 years this dinner I had tonight with salmon, a sauce that was unbelievable and fresh asparagus topped all of them. Add to that an exceptional staff and an interior that's old, beautiful made of wood... we spent our time looking at the beauty of the building while we were waiting for our food This is a place to visit no question

This is a restaurant in a fabulous beautiful setting and it serves great food. The restaurant is in a remodeled old boutique hotel and full of charm and history. A great place for a special evening. The food combines French classic cuisine with local flavors and all our dishes were excellent. Has a great and extensive wine list and service was very attentive and flawless.

restaurant can use a refresh (fabric tears, stains). Service nice and reserved vs. pushy and loud. Varied menu; fish, seafood, meat, pasta. Decent food. Nice courtyard has a few tables and heat lamps. Old fashioned half circle tables for some.
