The restaurant location is very good in Newtown, next to Museum Africa with nice outside terrace. There is no toilet on the premises, you have to go to the building around the back and past a security guard. The service was very poor and the food very average. Would not go back here again.

it was a Monday evening and the restaurant was VERY quiet, which suited me perfectly. The waiter (Tino) was friendly and eager to serve. I had some beverages and ordered the sirloin - medium rare. i'm quite full of nonsense when it comes to my steak and was just holding thumbs that they get it right. What an awesome surprise!... Sophiatown in Newtown and Midrand alike are my favorite restaurant in Johannesburg. Often with live music or various other forms of entertainment in the evenings. The food is always so good, and the atmosphere so friendly and upbeat. Great for tourists looking to tast some South African cuisine, or a great night out for any Jo'burger!

Attending an early show at Market Theatre and needed to eat. Options in this area are currently very limited. Came across Sophiatown Bar & Lounge. Time was limited so we had a honey chicken salad and roast beef salad. Portions nothing to shout about and both were pretty average. Service was good but then it should have been as there... More

Went with friends for dinner before Vodacom concert. Ordered chicken wraps and most ingredients were missing. When we complained to the manager, he insisted that all ingredients were put in. Missing roasted peppers, guacamole, cheddar cheese, sour cream and salsa. All we got was a few scraps of chicken, lettuce, tomato and cucumber. Also asked for toasted wraps and received... More

Could've been much much better. Food was average. Service not the best. And it was too noisy, from the music and the large crowds.

We had a large group of over 70 guests dine there recently and the experience was nothing short of appalling. The waiter service was dreadful and the group leaders had to serve drinks and clear plates. There was not enough food on the buffet for everyone to have a varied choice. The owner of the restaurant was non committal, unapologetic... More

We were a very large group and visited Sophiatown for dinner. We had already pre-selected most of our meals choices, but they still took a very long time to arrive. The waiters were not too attentive in taking and refilling drinks order too. But the main course made up for the service. I had roast lamb which is probably the... More

Having been to its sister restaurant in Melville, I expected more from this one. It felt cold and empty, but maybe it's because we went there on a public holiday and the area was quiet. The food was ok, nothing spectacular. In fact, I don't remember what I had to eat. Since the location is touted as popular with tourists,... More
