This restaurant had been suggested to us by a friend, who was ecstatic about the setting, with sweeping views of vineyards and Paarl Rock, so we decided to try it out. We went for a morning coffee and light breakfast. It was about 10.30 am....The restaurant was not at all busy. We were not sure where to go, and although this must have been obvious from our hesitant entrance, we were simply ignored by the staff (two waitresses and a barman) who were more interested in talking to each other, and the one waitress laying a table right beside where we were awkwardly standing, without any comment or giving us any welcome or help. Having seated ourselves, we asked for coffees and ordered a breakfast dish each. The coffees did not come quickly, (what is difficult about making coffee these days?) although it is fair to say that the coffee was good when it did come. But we waited and waited for the breakfast dishes, to the point where, after 25 minutes, we told one waitress that if they did not come in the next two minutes we would cancel the order. Miraculously, they then, of course appeared. My crushed avocado on toast was certainly tasty and interesting, with pickled shallots and toasted pumpkin seeds. However, my husband wanted a simple snack of scrambled eggs, toast and bacon. The scrambled eggs looked more like pasta, the bacon was not crispy and the toast was barely toasted at all. However, with the delay already suffered, we did not have time to ask for it to be better done. There was no offer of anything else we might like with the meal, so my husband had to expressly ask for tomato ketchup to help moisten the food. Neither was there any offer of water. We also had to ask for this and, having of course now long drunk the first coffees, we needed to order more, to go with the food. Catching any server’s eye was difficult. By now, having had to rush our eating, because of the delay in bringing our food, we were pressed for time. So I had to go and pay at the cash desk, rather than wait for a bill. In short, the setting and the views from this restaurant are spectacular. If all the food had been as good as my own dish, then that would have been nice as well, but it was not. But the most disappointing thing was the off-hand and inattentive service, which can only be described as perfunctory. Very sad.More
