Went with a friend to enjoy local pub food and local beers. Had a great IPA beer, squid and goat cheese with fig.

Found after a quick search on Google for an outdoor pub area after a walk in the Chilterns. Lovely to sit outside in the sun but the food was disappointing. We shared 4 starters and none were particularly impressive... squid didn't taste fresh, asparagus soggy and the roasted garlic on the bread platter was flavourless. Unfortunately we wouldn't be back... More

Good staff, great food, lovely setting with a great pub garden. I tend to visit when the weather is good as there's good parking and lots of room and tables in the garden. The food is very good quality pub food.

Four of us in the group. 3 had a nice meal. The pil pil chicken arrived dry, tasteless, on a bed of rocket leaves with no sauce or dressing. Had to be eaten by hand. Was like an undernourished chicken. They didn't charge when it was sent back but didn't offer recompense. Sunday lunch spoiled for one of the group.... More

Visited here for Sunday lunch yesterday having booked a table online about an hour before. Friendly and welcoming greeting and offered a choice of tables as the place was not too busy. Chose a table in the bar area as we had our dog with us. Service was very good, quick and efficient. I believed that on a Sunday, lunch,... More

I would like to give 4 1/2 stars.... The food was good with lots of choice for everyone... although the prices seem to have gone up a bit since our last visit... The beef croquette was a surprise and very tasty... just needed a little more gravy, which, on reflection we should have requested.... The service was good and effiecent,... More

Lovely lunch with my wife over the weekend at this pub. Food was great and the service was friendly and attentive. There was a lovely garden in the back which would be great on a summers day. I would certainly return if I was back in the area.

Thank Lockwood17

From the banks of the Thames take the short trip up the winding hill to Bovingdon Green and the warm, wooden heart of award-winning The Royal Oak.

Oak by name and oaken by nature - but not hard or austere: not a bit of it.

Bare floorboards and ancient timbers ooze bonhomie, it feels like someone's home - it might as well be yours for the time you are there. Like old friends visiting for dinner, the welcome is easy and relaxed. It's journey's end.
