We recently visited this restaurant and was totally amazed at the tastefulness of the food. We had the Clam Chowder and it was delicious all around. We also tasted the Crab Omelet and Shrimp Omelet and both were excellent. The service was the best and...the server made us feel welcome and valued customers. All the servers were courteous and friendly. It was such a wonderful experience all around.More

My husband and I enjoyed another fabulous holiday meal from Old Fisherman’s Grotto at Old Fisherman’s Wharf, this time for our Valentine’s Day dinner at home! Chef Juan of Old Fisherman’s Grotto hit it out of the ballpark again with his wonderful Valentine’s Day feast...making it a very special and easy to enjoy holiday dinner for us! The beautifully prepared surf and turf duo included succulent and sweet lobster tail with clarified butter and a very tender flavorful filet mignon (cooked just right!) with demi-Glace sauce and portabella mushrooms, which was a very satisfying celebratory combination for us. Always a favorite, the two large stuffed twice baked potatoes were cooked to perfection. The roasted organic vegetables were excellent, too, including brussels sprouts, green beans and more. The Kings Hawaiian rolls were a nice accompaniment making it feel like we were at a restaurant enjoying this fine dining experience. The unforgettable delicious dessert featured sweet fresh strawberries dipped in not one but two types of chocolate – white and dark—accompanied by a heart-shaped delectable layered chocolate cake filled and frosted with raspberry buttercream topped with fresh raspberries. Driving up to the head of Old Fisherman’s Wharf and having the box placed in our car trunk right at our reservation time made it all so convenient. The Prosecco champagne was the final sweet touch and allowed us to make a toast to our marriage and to Chef Juan …and to everyone at Old Fisherman’s Grotto, too! Cheers and Thank You! And, we will add, that anytime we dine at Old Fisherman's Grotto, we enjoy a high quality lunch or dinner experience with a wide range of entrees!More

Chef Juan has done it again!!! For a major holiday meal like Christmas Day Dinner, he pulled out all of the stops and created a magnificent feast to be enjoyed by us at home. He had two dinner choices and we selected the Prime Rib,...a longtime favorite. It was ready curbside in a large foil container when we went to pick it up curbside easily at the head of Old Fisherman's Wharf. It was still warm when arrived home so we dined early as we had skipped lunch in anticipation. Chef Juan's Christmas Dinner was simply fantastic! First of all, the Slow Roasted Prime Rib was medium rare like we prefer and really tender and flavorful. It was accompanied by creamy horseradish and au jus. The stuffed twice baked baked potatoes were a total treat as they're very hard to find in restaurants these days and were simply delicious. The variety of vegetables were wonderful including parsnips, green beans, brussels sprouts and yams, all very tasty. The King's Hawaiian dinner roll with butter simply added to the elegance of the dinner. Dessert was a fabulous fresh and crispy Cranberry and Apple Tart with whipped cream that was not overly sweet but served as the perfect finale to a virtual Christmas feast! Plus, we have lots of left overs for more amazing meals this week. A HUGE thank you, Chef Juan and the Old Fisherman's Wharf team for making our Christmas holiday so special...and memorable too!More

So pleased that we decided to eat dinner here while we were in this area. The food was amazing and the service was great. They have heaters outside next to the tables which kept us warm while we were eating. We never felt rushed even...though we ended up being the last people seated as the evening drew to a close. It was an awesome experience from start to finish.More

During the Pandemic, to be just a bit safer due to some level of asthma, we love ordering convenient and delicious To Go/Curbside cuisine from Old Fisherman's Grotto to take home and dine on that evening - often enjoying fabulous leftovers a day or two...later! Tonight, we had an amazingly tender Chicken Marsala sauteed with wine and Portabello mushrooms, very tasty toasted and unique Israeli cous cous and fresh organic vegetables including our local favorite, brussels sprouts. My husband enjoyed his Maple Soy Skirt Steak which was so tender and juicy with an absolutely wonderful flavor. He also liked the Parmesan Scalloped Potatoes which were light and delicious as well as the sauteed organic vegetables. We started with the legendary Old Fisherman's Grotto Clam Chowder, always a treat, plus a fresh crisp Caesar Salad with excellent garlic bread. It is always a pleasure to enjoy dinner or lunch from Old Fisherman's Grotto and their on site dining is always awesome, too with great customer service! Kudos to the Grotto and the Chef and his staff!More

I eat here every time I get to Monterey and it never disappoints. This time was very different with the COVID restrictions. And Chris Shake and his staff did an absolutely excellent job of making everyone comfortable, happy, and satisfied with their meal given what...they had to do to set up an outside dining experience. Their tables were scattered around the Wharf to keep distancing, and cleanliness and sanitization along with the staff wearing protective masks and gloves made you feel they were concerned for your health as well as their own. And even with all that - the meal was PERFECTION! Lobster and a filet mignon that melted in our mouths. Twice baked potato and delicious vegeys on the side - no hunger left over. AND THEN the dessert. The pumpkin cheesecake was beyond belief. I could not eat it all - and neither could my sweetheart with his chocolate cake. Our server has been there 27 years - Iman - and loves his job and it showed. He went out of his way to provide care to every table he waited on, and even though we were sitting outside along the wharf it was cozy and romantic. Now there's a great story about this place on top of the great food - and when you go ask them to tell you about Sabu Shake the original owner. (hint - it has to do with the FIRST movie Jungle Book)More

We were in Monterey for the evening and because of the great reviews on Tripadvisor, we decided to try Old Fisherman's Grotto. It was a Saturday around 5:30pm and there was a 1 1/2 hr. wait but we had no other plans, we wandered around...the wharf and stores and waited. It was more like 2 hrs., we were hungry but understood and willing to wait. Due to Covid-19, tables were outdoors but you could tell that the waiters were moving as fast as they can to serve and clear tables. We were celebrating our Anniversary for we went for the best! Started with their famous Bloody Mary, hubby had beer, we each had a cup of Chowder, side of Fired Calamari, hubby had their crab, shrimp, scallop& crabcake plate and I had the lobster, scallop, salmon & shirmp plate. The service was quick, Jose, our waiter was friendly . You wouldn't know that this restaurant was overwhelmed with customers by the way their waiters paid close attention to each table. Superb service and our meal was absolutely delicious and we were stuffed!!!! The restaurant remembered that it was our anniversary and gave us a complimentary cheesecake to share. Compared to Northern California's Fisherman's Wharf, our bill was very reasonable and well worth it. WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO END OUR DINING EXPERIENCE.THANK YOU TO YOUR STAFF!More

Yes, this restaurant is in a super-touristy part of Monterey. Yes, most of the restaurants in this area are dialing it in. But the Old Fisherman's Grotto delivers excellent food and truly outstanding service, providing a lovely experience on Fisherman's Wharf, transporting you from riff-raff...tourist to VIP, thanks to impeccable, super-attentive service. I was torn between their signature Cioppino and scallops. The waiter said the cioppino was "very good" but the scallops were wonderful. I took that as a strong recommendation. On top of the unsurpassed service, the food was outstanding. We ordered a martini--the waiter got my order right without a single repetition of instructions and went an extra mile to make sure mine was gluten-free-- a bottomless Arnold Palmer for my son, the grilled artichoke, drizzled with high quality balsamic, the sand dabs, and the scallops. My son's comment about the sand dabs: "amazing." The martini was dry and delicious, the scallops were, as advertised, wonderful. Did I mop up my son's caper aoli with the rice on my plate after I was done? Yes of course I did and it was delicious. We were very happy customers. We arrived about 4pm which was a good time to go, only requiring about a 15 minute wait for their small numbers of tables due to Covid-19 restrictions. Our meal, with appetizers was about $100. Since we skipped lunch we were very happy to indulge in a luxurious dinner. Well worth it.More

Sure it's a tourist trap, but the Old Fishermen's Grotto still has one of the best clam chowders in town. Creamy but not too salty, the Grotto's chowder is arguably one of the best you'll find outside of Boston, Massachusetts. The rest of their menu...is pretty standard fare for Monterey's fisherman's wharf. Their calamari is solid. Not too heavily breaded, light, and crispy. For $28, you can go for a half Dungeness Crab, with veggies and fries on the side. The service is pretty solid. Due to Covid-19, their outdoor seating has plexiglass between each booth, and they seem to be diligently scrubbing down all the table and chair surfaces between each seating.More

I do not know if they do not allow children there. We were there around 9pm and we didn’t even see children out on the wharf. But you are correct that people allow their own children to behave badly and therefore ruin it... More
