So, judging from the external appearance, you could be forgiven for expecting a kitschy experience but this is a classy place. Service is top notch, food is very good, and the views aren't bad (although the restaurant is on the less interesting side of the wharf). The clam chowder is "Monterey style" - looks like New England to me, but... More

We stopped in on the first night in Monterey and I ordered the sea bass it was very very good and we also order the halibut it was good enough for Jehovah I would definitely recommend dinner here. I have to remember that this is a tourist area so it was a little bit pricier than I wanted but the... More

I had heard such good things about this place, but the food was very disappointing to us. My husband ordered fresh fish off the special menu and it was very boring. I ordered what the restaurant called their best pasta dish and it was also very bland. We had a similarly priced meal at The Chart House the night before... More

On a cool night, we walked the Wharf and found the chowder at Grotto to be much better than the other locations trolling for customers. Also, they were packed - busier than any other restaurant on the Wharf. Portions were so huge, I couldn't finish my meal. Very attentive service and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend it.

My wife is on a business trip and we went out for a business dinner. Atmosphere was lovely and quiet/private enough for a productive business dinner. Petrale sole was quite good and our guest enjoyed the seafood putanesca. Wine was discounted 25% - Monday is a notoriously slow night.

My husband and I have gone to Old Fisherman's Grotto once or twice a year when we visit Monterey! The food has always been amazing and we've spent $75 to $100 each time, and it's money well spent because when we travel, we love to eat and try new restaurants but this one was one of our favorites. Until this... More

It was a great selection. I have some doubts, because you get almost everywhere a ticket for a free appetizer, and my thoughts, was that maybe is to comercial, but the free appetizer was great, as well the rest of the food. Delicious, well done!

Great spot if you want seafood on the wharf. This is their specialty so don't go there if you want anything else.

They got us in by offering a free appetizer. Then once we were seated our server said it was 25% off bottles of wine (Wednesday). I don't recommend the platter with the crab, but the platter with the lobster and scallops was better. And of course you have to at least get a cup of the famous clam chowder, a... More

We were very excited to eat at Old Fisherman's Grotto since it was highly recommended by many people. Although the atmosphere was very good and the service was excellent, I cannot say the same for the food. We ate a mixed seafood platter and the crab they advised strongly was not good and it was served cold in a hot... More
