This place has one Michelin star, and it definitely deserves it. Located in a strip mall, its appearance is very low key and unassuming. From the outside, you would not have guessed it's a place that serves up such excellent food. The Decor is very minimalistic. Not a big place - a capacity of 18 people, two staggered seatings. The... We were in NYC all last week and came to visit our son on the way back home. He arranged for us to go here to help celebrate our 55th and OMG did he ever pick a winner. Delectable. Incredible flavor and subtly done best Japanese cuisine we've had since our last trip to Nippon. A nine course meal with... More

I have been to this restaurant twice and both times I have been amazed. The restaurant only changes their menu once a month and there is limited seating so it was extremely difficult to get a reservation. However, both times, it has been the best Japanese food I have ever had. This place serves more that just fish. They serve... More

My husband and I celebrated his birthday at Wakuriya. We enjoyed the evening immensely. The owners (husband-wife team) clearly care about making your dining experience one of a kind. The husband, Katsuhiro, meticulously prepares the food while his wife, Mayumi, assures all your needs are met. The nine course meal brought new palate experiences that went beyond what we could... Words can only begin to describe how amazing Wakuriya is. The ambiance is pleasant, intimate and calm allowing you peace to enjoy the amazing food at a comfortable pace. The food is an impressively creative expression of traditional Japanese Kaiseki with some European and American flair. Every dish of the tasting was phenomenal, well balanced flavors artistically displayed and perfectly... More

This wonderful gem unexpectedly is located in an upscale strip mall in San Mateo and is a first rate dining experience on all levels. The restaurant is tastefully (no pun intended) and beautifully decorated, and seats only 18 or so diners, which creates an intimate and relaxing ambiance. The 9-course menu is chosen for you, so the only decision you... More

This was one of the more memorable Japanese meals we ever had. Wykuriya is a tiny restaurant ran by a chef and his very efficient wife. Every dish was beautifully presented and every bite memorable. Cant wait to go again!

I must say of all the kaiseki dinner I've been to, Wakuriya has to rank as among one of the best I've been to. The chef and his wife both came from Kyoto Kitcho. In my opinion, this restaurant surpass that of the restaurant in Kyoto. The dishes are innovative and original. The ingredients, fresh and exotic. However, one caution... More

High end Japanese at it's finest. Very personal service with unique dining experiences make dining here a special event. My only wish is that they could accommodate a gluten free diner but with all the aged soy sauces it is understandable.

Wakuriya serves a contemporary variation of the traditional multi-course Japanese kaiseki dinner. The courses follow the traditional kaiseki sequence but the ingredients offer surprises such as finding prosciutto in one of the dishes. All the dishes were artistically presented on beautiful Japanese table ware such as a green segment of bamboo for a soup bowl. It is a challenge to... More
