It's a beautiful restaurant and it was busy for a Sunday which is expected. We sat at the oyster bar which I wouldn't recommend. The seats are wood and as small as a postage stamp. Yes, they look cool, but completely the most uncomfortable seats....More

Business meal for 3 people on a Tuesday night. All three of us enjoyed the appetizers (crab cakes and calamari) and our entrees (king crab legs, salmon and chicken). Servers were attentive. Only misstep was the lack of any crackers to go with the clam...More

We joke about the time we went here for dinner. We both had the jambalaya and thought it was "m'eh"- nothing special; which was too bad cuz we tried it for the first and only time for a "special occasion". Attitude and service were bad,...More

Held a company reception in the upstairs bar/restaurant area. Great atmosphere and vibe plus good wait staff who kept us fat and happy. The upstairs has it's own bar and a view out the old warehouse windows of the busy street scene below. Our fare...More

Kingfish was once the ruling class in San Mateo reataurants but they seem to have just retired and are cruising by without trying very hard. They have recently remodelled but the kitchen brains needed the rehaul. Cajun specialties and seafood are on the menu, there...More

Had a gift card so we decided to use it. Place was packed. How that can be I don't know. Service was tolerable but not the food. Calamari appetizer was cold and covered with some unknown sauce. Ahi tuna salad was almost scary. Color of...More

Birthday diner for our son. Service was ok by not very attentive. Timing was slow, we are ok with a relaxed pace but this was even more than that. Dishes were good but not great. There is too much reliance of adding bacon to dished...More

My husband and I used to regularly come here years ago, and I wondered why aloud we didn't come regularly now. He reminded me that Kingfish used to be more affordable and so it's only a restaurant we come to for special occasions like our...More

Kingfish is a perfect location for business meetings with private rooms, excellent food choices, a variety of wines/ cocktails, and an attentive staff. I will leverage them again for my meetings.

Description
Kingfish Restaurant, named after Huey Long, "the colorful, bigger than life man", is a restaurant that is also "bigger than life and very colorful. Kingfish is a one of a kind restaurant situated in downtown San Mateo in a historical 1920's art deco building. The restaurant features an exhibition Oyster bar, 3 full bars exhibiting a broad range of spirits and talented mixologists. There are 2 wine cellars stocked with some of the very hardest to find wines in the world, a Speakeasy lounge that always has an unparalleled live music line-up, cozy booths, and private dining rooms that would make even the French Quarter jealous. "...to walk into Kingfish is, to walk into someone's dream.", is how acclaimed SF Chronicle food editor, Michael Bauer, referred to the decor at Kingfish. Ownership takes great pride in the fact that they have one of the largest collections of authentic, Southern-Lousiana folk art in the country, to which they are always adding. The food at Kingfish is American and gives almost every palette a reason to crave. There is a passion that emanates directly from the owners, to serve only the freshest seafood possible. The steaks that are served are some of the best and tastiest you can find in the world. The ability to give each guest exactly what they crave and desire has been an increasing goal of Kingfish in recent years.
