When the waitress says that everything is good, you should believe her. Everything was really good. While the bar is in a building, the restaurant tables are out back in what is sort-of-a tent filled with greenery; it's a great looking space with plenty of heaters. The food is California fresh-from-the-market cooking. It's hard to tell from the menu whether... More

The setting is beautiful. Our server, Brian, was knowledgeable and enthusiastic in answering our questions about the menu. We had grilled pork shoulder with peaches, red pumpkin agnolotti, blistered baby broccoli with pigs ears and the Denver steak with porcini bordelaise, Russian kale and chanterelles. The food was skillfully prepared and everything was delicious. Brian recommended wine and even gave... More

We had a delightful experience at Michael's in Santa Monica recently -- in all respects. We felt welcome from the first moment, the host (and owner) and all the staff seemed genuinely to care about the food and our experience. Not a false note. Both the wine (from Michael's Malibu vineyard, I think) and the food were memorable, with an... More

Michael's is, as far as I've come to know, a preeminent "classic" Santa Monica spot. Opened in '79, a hang out for Fleetwood Mac when they were recording Tusk (generally a freaky hot-spot for the whos-who in the 80s), one of the restaurants responsible for "California Cuisine" and sometime home to a slew of notable chefs... I came for a... More

Michael's and its namesake, Michael, are icons of California cuisine laid the foundation for the great dining we enjoy in LA. Its hard to stay relevant and at the top of your game for 30 years. but i am rooting for both. we dined recently with some friends wanting to try out the new chef with the old menu. Not... More

Its about to close in a week till sep 12, when the new already executive chef, Miles Thompson, debuts 'his own' menu. Still, our waiter informs us that Miles has already changed the cooking style to provide the thrills of the ultimate of textures, temperaturs, color, and tastes. If that's the case, I recommend never returning. We had the worst overall... More

My colleagues in our LA office took me here years ago. It was an astonishingly beautiful place. I really liked the table settings, the entire atomosphere and many more. The food was great, too. But unfortunately I didn't have much of an appetite due to jet lag. I'd go back there if I have a chance to visit LA again.

This is a lovely patio dining spot - so why such a low grade? When we walked in their first question was - do you live here. When we told them we didn't, it just seemed like they didn't care. How can I illustrate the poor level of service? We ordered a $225 bottle of champagne which overflowed on opening.... More

We went there for appetizers and drinks. The restaurant was recommended to us by our hotel. They were spot on describing the food and service. The hostess was hilarious. Food was wonderful! Gorgeous place too!

I visited Michael's on my own on a Thursday evening around 19:00. Sitting on the back patio with the lush greenery and twinkly lights - was like time warp to the 1980s but in a very good way. Service was warm and the food very tasty. I had a very satisfying, but still light - potato leak soup with truffle... More

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
