Amu is that wonderful kind of restaurant that feels like a bit of a secret. It's tiny. It's not at all a typical Sushi place, but rather a kind of Japanese pub called an Izakaya. For sheer consistency and creativity and value they rate right at the top of my favorite Boulder restaurants, including Frasca. Go for simple food cooked... More

If you ask the typical American about their favorite Japanese food, if any, they'll probably say "sushi" or "hibachi". As tasty as both of those are, anyone restricting themselves to either is missing out on an entire world. Moreover, both sushi and hibachi (hibachi actually being a heating device not usually used for cooking - teppanyaki is the style Americans... More

We decided to sit outside, with a little bit of concern for the service which with only two tables there could have been out of sight, out of mind. No worries, the waiter was right on the service the entire meal. He was not Japanese but greeted us with a “Irasshaimase,” something heard often in Japan but the first time... More

Very small space and can be difficult to snag a seat at the bar. But worth the effort. Not a sushi bar, although related to Sushi Zanmai next door. Very good fresh seafood, both raw and cooked. Nice tempura soft shell crab. Very good fried shrimp in a spicy-sweet chili sauce. Amazingly good hamachi sashimi. Great flavor all around. Good... More

We enjoyed it, but hadn't read the reviews & thought we were going to regular sushi place. Place is run by a bunch of anglos who are serious Japanophiles (sp?), so for starters you must take off shoes when you enter. The staff have all learned "restaurant Japanese" and you are regaled with the usual Japanese greeting phrases and niceties.... More

I was in Boulder for a week and had dinner here four times. Superb food. Very tasty. Imaginative and authentic plus a wonderful range of saki. I travel a lot and this place is in my top few anywhere in the world.

Amu is a tiny restaurant with the highest quality Japanese cuisine ever -- inventive, fresh, subtle in flavor, presented in the most elegant and color-combining way. They have high-quality sake to complement every meal. I want to eat there just to help them continue to exist, they are such a high standard of integrity and quality.

We went to Amu last month because my daughter wanted yakionigiri (fried rice balls). I have been to many izakayas in Japan (I like to describe the style as Japanese tapas - small portions to share). It is very authentic and great for a date night (more private setting in the back) and for groups. it also has the harder... More

I am almost afraid to say how great this place is because I want there to be room for me on my next visit. It is NOT a sushi restaurant, but an izikaya, with more of the "comfort food" style. There is a small appetizer in the beginning which is on the house. We had many courses over quite a... More

The manager of a credit union I use here invited me to a fund raiser at a Buddhist temple a block away from here. We were both hungry. So we skipped-out and down the street to this Gem. Had sashimi and a hot-pot. Oh, and a nice genmai-cha. Owner was there and respectfully partook in conversation with her and I... More
