If you're the kind of traveler who seeks burgers and fries that don't look and taste exactly like the millions sold in the major roadside chain food factories across America, then Oscar's Cafe may be just the kind of place you're looking for. Oscar's is locally owned and operated, and has been in Durango for over 40 years. The interior has the classic narrow diner feel with a well-worn Formica topped counter with red vinyl stools along one side and similarly topped tables and chairs along the other. The walls are covered with local diner kitsch. One of us had lunch here on an April Monday. The friendly owner was onsite during the meal and worked nonstop. His hardworking staff clearly work as a team, and are also friendly and efficient. I was sipping an ice cold Coke (a longtime personal favorite/weakness) less than a minute after sitting down. Oscar's menu includes many tasty breakfast items. Breakfast is served Monday through Saturday 7 to 11 AM, and all day on Sunday. The lunch menu is standard diner fare with a few twists and favorites including generous creamy milkshakes topped with whipped cream. The Cafe is kid friendly and has a kids menu. The bathrooms are small but clean. The regular local clientele is cheerful and boisterous. Lunch was a hamburger and fries (see attached photo). The tasty burger came with a toasted bun and generous portions of lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onion. The heaping portion of lightly seasoned shoestring fries were also very tasty. Lunch pre-tip, including tax and a bottomless Coke, came to $15.28. Seems like lunch around $15.00 has become the standard these days. Bottom line, if you enjoy non-chain locally owned and operated diners, Oscar's is definitely worth a visit. 👍🏻

If the Durango visitor center hadn’t recommended this café we never would’ve tried it as it is in a strip mall, with a very unassuming storefront. It is a nice little fashion diner. We had a chef salad which was very generously sized and had a very crisp tomatoes, other veggies, and ample amount of freshly sliced ham and turkey and hard boiled egg. We also had a burger with fresh fruit instead of french fries. The fresh fruit consisted orange slices and pineapple chunks, cantaloupe, grapes and strawberries - better than typical diner fare. And we had a delicious freshly made chocolate shake – the old-fashioned kind where they actually smell and ice cream and syrup and they gave me the extra that wouldn’t fit in the tall milkshake glass, in the stainless steel cup! Wish we had room for some of the delicious looking pies.

Oscars gets busy because it's good, it gets crowded because it's small.
Extensive breakfast menu, if you can't find anything you like on Oscar's breakfast menu, wait for lunch.
The food we ordered was well prepared and presented, portions are large, no matter how delicious you may not be able to finish.
Service is prompt and good. People at Oscar's are friendly.
Worth stopping at Oscar'more than once.

We have only been here the one time and we only had burgers for lunch. Maybe breakfast is better.
The burgers and fries were not great, but not bad either. The Diet Coke tasted like it had a mix of Dr Pepper in it and our waitress had to have the other waitress check it. She said it was fine… it wasn’t. When you pay almost $4 for a small fountain drink, it needs to be right. So that was odd. You had to get your own refills while the two waitresses talked and the men’s restroom was pretty gross. I would pass on this place based on it being avg, but dirty and the service was poor.

Let's begin with service: Our attendant, Cameron was attentive, funny, and extremely polite. She made us feel special from the moment she asked us "Was there anything we needed to drink?"
The menu is extensive with varied breakfast and lunch selections. I decided on Biscuits and Gravy, with two eggs, and hash browns. Portions were "Huge", so my wife and I decided to share. The sausage gravy was heavenly and piled up two large biscuits. Fried eggs were prepared the way I like it (sunny side over hard), and the hash browns were hot and crispy on the outside.
Next time I visit Durango, this will be my must stop place for breakfast.

Horrible, Oscars use to be so good. Out of three meals they were all gross. The service was just as bad, the waitperson was too busy on her phone. The restroom was out of toilet paper and the fan sounded like a plane taking off. We were there for lunch, the music was so loud, you would think you were at a club. What a waste of time and money.

We had a wonderful visit to Oscar’s Cafe. The food was fantastic and the service was exceptional. The menu is very broad in nature and the quality of the food is truly exceptional. My only regret is that we didn’t have time to sample the homemade pies….they looked delicious!!

We enjoyed our late breakfast in this place. We ordered a delicious oatmeal with blueberries and a omelette with bacon and hash browns. Took a little while until the food turned up but it was delicious once again. What a good and flavorful food we had. Place is extremely busy, no free tables and waiting for a long time.

This is a classic diner with counter seating as well as tables. The staff was personable, positive and made sure we had everything. We sat at the counter and took in the ambiance and talked with others who were local and made food suggestions. The food was good classic diner food with reasonable serving sizes. This is just a great classic place to get a good breakfast.

What a wonderful, attentive waitstaff! They were the best! The breakfast had good-sized portions - enough to take for the next day. The hash browns were my favorite - crunchy and delicious. The coffee was also quite good! It is a small place, so go before you get too hungry in case you have to wait a bit. It's worth the wait. Can't wait to go back!

We stumbled upon Oscars while looking for a quick breakfast before leaving Durango. The cinnamon bun French toast was wonderful and was the morning special along with bacon and eggs. The portion was large enough that my husband and I split it. While breakfast was a solid 5, we asked advice as to whether we should return to Denver through Silvteron or or Buena Vista. We ran into snow coming through Wolf Creek Pass and were apprehensive about returning this way. The owner made the recommendation to return through Wolf Creek Pass because it was much safer than the road to Silverton this time of year. We would definitely come back.

Except breakfast. I had the breakfast Verdi with potatoes, eggs, cheese smothered in a pork green chili sauce. Yummy. My wife had a fluffy omelette with hash browns and toast. Excellent. Very efficient process to sit you in this small cafe. However very popular and wait time can be over ten minutes. Staff was very courteous and friendly even though very busy.

The food was AMAZING! You get so much for your money! Well worth it. They have the cutest little train around the top of the building that goes around the restaurant & my two year old was fascinated watching the train! We did have to wait about 40 minutes to be seated…which just goes to show how busy & great their food is! I wish they had a bigger place w more seating so maybe it wouldn’t be such an issue. Overall, very good place for breakfast!

Stopped for lunch while spending the day visiting Durango. The restaurant is a fairly small location tucked into a spot in the Town Plaza shopping center. Since the place is both small and rather popular, the seating fills up fast. When we arrived all of the tables and stool at the counter were full as well as the couple outdoor dining tables. Fortunately, there was only about a 10-minute wait to be seated.
Despite being busy, service was polite and friendly throughout our dining experience. The place is a diner and has a bit of that "greasy spoon" feel to it, but our food was well-prepared and tasty. I had their Cosmo burger and fries, and all of it was great. Portions are good sized, so we didn't have room for dessert. We did order one of their cinnamon rolls to go, though (which was an excellent treat that night).

Restaurant can get very busy - but you can access an app and get added to the waiting list. They notify you when your table is ready. They have a counter if you are a single. Not many tables - so suggest getting on the wait list. Breakfast was very good and the menu was large - so many choices. Would go again.
