I've always only written reviews about restaurants I've enjoyed but in this instance felt compelled to make an exception for what was perhaps the rudest service I've ever experienced in my certainly 40+ years of dining out. To be fair, we were subjected to this...More

Stopped in for a bite before heading to the theatre. Food was excellent. Service was great - even when we asked to substitute chicken for shrimp in one of the dishes. Area was quiet and conversations were easily managed. A great place to eat.

Try to stop at Griswold's whenever I'm in the area; was in time for lunch, and ordered their famous Fish 'n Chips, Don't know exactly how they fry their fish, but it's the best in the world, as far as I'm concerned; never greasy, just...More

Dined here while on vacation on Memorial Day evening. A quiet, chilly evening. Dinner was much enjoyed. The fried chicken breast over puréed potatoes was unique and very good. Husband had an excellent pasta dish. Wish it had been a bit more lively that evening.

One of the best places I have seen in Connecticut. A place with stile and charm as well as a very friendly service. I was there for Sea Shanties and warmly recommend the event.

The "Gris" as the locals call is one of the oldest Inns and restaurants in America. Steeped in nautical history and filled with art and artifacts throughout, this is a wonderful experience if nothing thing else than just for a drink and meal at their...More

The tap room is pretty amazing in appearance, however like many such experiences the food is good but overpriced. You are paying for the experience more than the food. The fish chips however were a solid affordable delicious option.

A must-do when in southern CT. Set in the quintessentially New England town of Essex, it is loaded with old-time charm. The food is okay, but you're really there for the atmosphere. The relatively new wine bar is fun, and either adds or detracts with...More

Casual is the only word for the Gris and the rest of the town. I would recommend The Peach Tree in Saybrook if you fell adventurous

Located in the “storybook” village of Essex mere steps from the Connecticut River, this 1776 landmark offers three distinct dining experiences. “Historic Dining” is offered in four handsome rooms - The Covered Bridge, The Gun Room, The Library and The Essex Room – where a renowned maritime art collection fills the walls. The Inn’s New England heritage and connection with the sea is apparent in the classic seasonal cuisine offered; diners may enjoy a more contemporary culinary experience in the stunning wine bar featuring tapas-style dining and an extensive selection of wines by the glass; tavern fare is offered in the atmospheric, award-winning Tap Room where lively music rings out nightly. Patio dining is an option May through October, weather permitting. Lunch and dinner served daily, Hunt Breakfast on Sunday.
