Called with friends for lunch and had not booked as we were very erarl -12.15ish. Our excellent host advised that the dining room was fully booked but then 'adjusted' his tables to fit us in. A splendid lunch was had by all and after a good few years when we had not visited this pub we will certainly be calling... More

We have been to the Royal Oak several times, staying on the caravan site at the back of the pub. The pub has great ambience and we are always made to feel very welcome by the landlord and his wife (Richard& Vicki) and their staff and also the regulars. This time we were staying on the caravan site for the... More

Mum and I dropped in here - good job the pub had just opened because we only just got a table - you need to book for Sunday lunch! The lunch was really good, I liked the generous bowl of mint sauce and huge gravy boat so we could help ourselves. Only 9.50 for roast lamb and I haven't had... More

We come to this pub to eat quite regularly as the food is always very good it's what we call proper food. We had a great meal again last night, there were six of us and we all enjoyed it. The chef came out to see what my husband had thought of his meal which was liver and he had... More

When we drove into the village of Car Colston yesterday, we thought how lovely it was; with The Royal Oak in prime position on The Green. On going to the bar to order drinks, we were surprised to note that regular customers were so friendly...as was the young barmaid. With our drinks in hand, (incidentally - I had a pint... More

Was excited when arrived, lovely fire on a cold night! Traditional menu what could be wrong? Fish pie - expensive and small and very very dry, hard microwaved bits - £12.95 plus extra for veg??? Had much much better at Wetherspoons! Hubby said beer kept well tho!

We stopped for lunch here with my notoriously cantankerous and at times difficult mother. Richard and the team had such an air of calm that it was a great success. From not wanting to eat out, she was by the end of the meal Waxing lyrical about Car Colston in the 1960 & 70's and her memories of those days.... More

Having telephoned to ensure food would be served on 27 December a table was reserved with the assurance this would be flexible due to walking several miles. Our reserved table was next to a roaring fire and there was a welcoming environment. Food was delicious, steak cooked to liking and good value. It was busy with two large parties however... More

Just like to say what a great pub lunch I had with a friend, not to mention great beer! The pub over looks the village green of car Colston, one of the largest village greens I've seen. The pub was bizzy for a week day but the food was served quickly and the staff very friendly. Thankyou to Richard and... More

Description
The picturesque village of Car Colston has 29 acres of village greens and is believed to be the largest rural common in England. The building of The Royal Oak is about two hundred years old and is thought by some to have been a hosiery factory hence the rather unusual vaulted brick ceiling in the bar which certainly would have carried the weight of the appropriate textiles machinery above.Richard & Vicky are members of the British Institute of Innkeeping. With Vicky offering her delicious culinary delights from the kitchen & Richard behind the bar with his fantastic tasting Cask Marque approved traditional real ales you are sure of a warm welcome and enjoyable experience but look out for the reported ghost of a Roman Centurion roaming the building.
