We're not sure how we missed seeing Open Studio on our initial search of restaurants to visit during our travels, but we're certainly glad we looked a second time. This Grates Cove establishment really checked all the boxes for us. First, the fusion of the...owners' Louisiana and Newfoundland heritages produces delicious, innovative food. The menu is short, but innovative. We tried the Seafood Étouffée, a deep bowl of shrimp, cod, and scallops in a deeply flavoured broth covering a bed of rice, topped with a large scoop of snow crab, and "Dirty Rice," a ground pork/rice combination topped with some delicately breaded and fried cod. We loved both. Dining with an amazing view of the bay while learning about the area from the owners was certainly special. Open Studio is a culinary delight, and well worth the drive (or, conveniently, they operate a couple of vacation homes in the Grates Cove...).More

I finally got my husband to visit St. John's and we headed out on a beautiful day trip to do the Baccalieu Trail. Courtney was very welcoming without reservations on a Monday. I always have the Korean Pancake and this time we also tried the...cod boulettes, lobster pizza and the jambalaya with shrimp. We also restocked my Sea Weed creams and bought the handcrafted purpleheart cooking utensil. Our day trip was perfect.More

We travel a great deal and I never expected to have one of the best meals ever in an isolated cove in Newfoundland but we did! Everything was local, incredibly fresh and filled with amazing flavours with an Asian influence. The shrimp, cod, fishcakes and...ramen were simply sensational and it was the best prepared kale I ever had. All washed down with Newfoundland's wonderful Iceburg Beer. The setting was wonderful too with beautiful ocean views, art and an old fashioned turntable to play old LPs. Thank you!More

Great food prepared in interesting ways. Big portions. Had a wonderful chicken jambalaya. Great space and views. My only regret is I didn't eat both evenings I was there. I am going back in mid August.

I had the pleasure of eating at Grates Cove Studio while visiting a friend in the area. Our table ordered Lobster Salad. The most filling salad you will ever eat. Seafood gumbo which was amazing and the Sausage burger on a Touton. Delicious. My definition...of a five star restaurant. Good food, good drinks, wonderful scenery and beautiful people.More

I visited Grates Cove with my family recently to show my kids where their great grandparents had come from. This is a remote town on the edge of the coast in Newfoundland with few services. Family had suggested we check this place out for lunch...and we were not disappointed. The menu was fantastic and eclectic - not at all the usual fish and chips road side restaurant we had expected. The menu was full of unique dishes and we loved everything we ordered - especially the lobster pizza and the Korean vegetarian pancake. The owners were charming and available to chat with. This was by far one of the best meals we had during our entire trip to Newfoundland. And the town itself is real off the beaten path Newfoundland - something special to see.More

Grates Cove is almost 2 hours from St. John's and although some fo the drive is scenic, most of it is boring. There isn't much to do around there other than walk and see old walls and the ocean so it was a nice surprise...to find a restaurant that had an interesting menu...not just fish & chips and burgers. We had a pork burger...different but good and my friends had seafood gumbo...all very good. I wouldn't recommend that you drive all the way out there just to eat but if you are near there, definitely worth the visit. They also have a neat studio and bake their own bread.More

We stayed at the Graves Cover Studios and the owners, Terrence and Courtney also own this restaurant. Courtney is a wonderful chef originally from southern Louisiana and we were delighted with her creole style cod dinner. So tasty. The following morning we were presented with...the most delicious french toast we've ever had that was topped with a fresh blueberry sauce. So good! I also purchased some of their seaweed lotion which I like very much.More

Unexpectedly wonderful food was the first surprise. The second is the seaweed based lotion developed and sold by the lovely Grates Cove Studio couple. I have used it on painfully cracking hands with astounding results, literally overnight my raw hands have healed to the point...that I can use them without pain throughout the day. I loved our visit to Grates Cove. Beautiful walks, an iceberg and ancient stone walls made for a great afternoon. Enjoy!More

We are staying in Carbonear, NFLD, and a local restaurant owner recommended that we drop any dinner plans we had for the night and head on over to Grates Cove to have dinner at Grates Cove Studios. We didn’t have any big dinner plans anyway...so we made the almost 2 hour drive along the Baccalieu Trail looking at different coves and visiting different communities along the way. Grates Cove is a beautiful little village overlooking the ocean. When we arrived at Grates Cove Studios for some dinner, the door was closed but unlocked. Turns out that the restaurant is closed on Wednesday’s, the day we were there, but the owners Courtney and Terrence welcomed us in anyway. They had only two options for dinner, a lobster seafood gumbo and shrimp boulettes. We were only there for the day so we decided to stay anyway. And lucky we did...the lobster gumbo was FULL of big chunks of lobster and was spiced so well it reminded us of our trip to New Orleans a few years ago. The rice in the gumbo was perfectly cooked, it was certainly made with love and care. The boulettes were crunchy on the outside and flavourful, especially when dipped into this amazing creole sauce that was so garlicky and herby. After our first order, we reordered them again it was so good. The hospitality is reminiscent of the famous Newfoundland warm hospitality and we felt right at home. Lots of stuff to look at while we ate as well, as I think it doubled as an art studio. You can tell a lot of love and care went into their food and their restaurant. Highly recommend making the trip over to Grates Cove just to try their food and experience their friendly hospitality. A side note, they also make this seaweed based face and body lotion. I tried it and it felt nice but remains to be seen the long term effects. I bought a medium sized bottle to try so I will have to amend my review with my thoughts once I’ve had a longer opportunity to try it out.More
