We have just returned from The Durham Ox which is our first visit even though it is only 2 miles from home. We enjoyed prawn cocktails . I had a sirloin steak which was juicy and tasty. My wife had beef borginone which was properly prepared with shallots and red wine. The service was excellent and the atmospher at what... More

Stayed overnight at this little gem, lovely bedroom, very comfortable bed and a great shower, your every comfort was taken into consideration We had a very good evening meal in a warm comfortable dining room, dressed for Christmas with a log fire it looked like something from a Christmas Card. The menu was varied and reasonable prices, the service was... More

Lovely meal here, nice atmosphere, friendly staff; we could do 'nit picking' criticism about service but the warm welcome and the fabulous food make small things unimportant. We have a bit of a thing about paying for food that is nowhere near what we could make ourselves but no problems here. Delicious, well presented and we did not leave hungry.... More

We have just been this evening for the first time in a long time. I have a sulphite allergy, so asked when we booked if they could accommodate, which they said they could. When we were seated, I mentioned this again and a lovely lady took the time to come out and tell me which items I could have (which... More

Anniversary meal, great food, the scallop and black pudding starter is the one to go for!, Excellent mains, good service, reasonable prices. The staff are extremely pleasant and helpful. Couldn't really ask for better. But......... both our desserts were enormous, rather off putting after the two previous courses. Had we known we would have shared.

Description
The Durham Ox is the oldest inn in Ilkeston dating from 1780 with later Victorian editions. The property is steeped in history having once been used as the town gaol with secret passages taking the prisoners from the cells in the cellars up to the Church in the market place where they were tried for their crimes.A major scheme of renovation and restoration this year has returned the pub back to its origins and created a quiet relaxing haven in which to unwind and enjoy a drink or a home cooked meal....or both
