Visited the Durham Ox dozens of times over the years and introduced family and many friends during this time. We have had many good meals and the odd one or two which were slightly disappointing. On the whole service had been good, however, we had been noticing if you mentioned something wasn't right with your meal it was met with... More

We went for a birthday celebration meal with 5 of us. All of the meals were very good, with the only exception being my steak which tasted a bit strange & bland. Every other element of all the meals was of top quality (including starters and sweets).

My first visit 20/10/16 and as soon as I stepped in the door I felt welcome. The furnishings create a wonderful atmosphere and it's like an English pub should be. The young waiter gave us a warm welcome and showed us to our table. The manager is very welcoming too and explained the offers of the evening and took our... More

Firstly the food at this place is great. However having been several times now, the one area which let's it down is the service. The staff are all very pleasant but it's the little things which don't make this a 4/5 rated place to eat. The other evening when we went I ordered the baked camembert. This has been on... More

Gave the Durham Ox a bit of a negative review a while back when we considered standards were slipping...so great to be able to report that we went back recently and had a delicious meal with great service. Have to say that the young waiter and young waitress (both wear glasses - sorry guys don't know your names) are fabulous... More

Friendly service. Pleasant surroundings. Fabulous food. Didn't need steak knife, meat very tender. Chunky chips to die for!

To begin my review, I don't tend to make an habit of doing write-ups, but feel this place deserves my time, This was our first visit to the Durham Ox and it looked warm and inviting from the outside. Myself, my girlfriend and daughter of twelve were greeted with huge smiles on entering, I personally thought all the staff genuinely... More

Wow totally unexpected from the outside. Inside pleasant surroundings staff really lovely and friendly but the food - absolutely delicious ( and I rate myself a good cook and I couldn't do any better) good size portions all home cooked not out of a packet and well presented. Well well worth a visit and not terribly expensive either. The manager... More

Description
The Durham Ox is the oldest inn in Ilkeston dating from 1780 with later Victorian editions. The property is steeped in history having once been used as the town gaol with secret passages taking the prisoners from the cells in the cellars up to the Church in the market place where they were tried for their crimes.A major scheme of renovation and restoration this year has returned the pub back to its origins and created a quiet relaxing haven in which to unwind and enjoy a drink or a home cooked meal....or both
