Been meaning to try Bittersweet for a while and finally had the chance. Relaxed atmosphere and helpful staff. A wide variety of whole desserts and a smaller number of 'by the slice' offerings. Tried the Pear in Almonds tart and loved it. They also have sandwiches and salads. Will definitely return!

Service was a little slow. The coffee drinks were deliscious but weren't hot enough. The "homemade" lemonade was from a bottle and we couldn't drink it. The ample samples was deliscious.

All the staff are friendly and helpful n this bustling yet not-in-any-hurry cafe. Delicious hot chocolate (though with a hint of cloves?) and pastries. Refreshingly, there is no wifi, so it is not the usual cafe filled with people surfing the net. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their food, drink and conversation.

As is often the case, friends tipped us off to this gem of a pastry shop and cafe. Bittersweet, located at 1114 West Belmont Avenue, specializes in all-day breakfast and light lunch with a flurry of house-made pastries, quiche, salads, soups, sandwiches and desserts, even peanut butter and jelly, grilled cheese and banana and nutella sandwiches for the kids. You... More

Bittersweet is one of Chicago's premier bakeries for exquisite pastries and special occasion cakes. We love their individual lemon meringue tarts, cupcakes, rustic apple tarte, and thumbprint cookies. Especially on weekends and before holidays, the wait for service at the bakery counter can be long. And be sure to feed the parking pay device as enforcement is strict (I got... More

Every holiday I have is full of Bittersweet deliciousness!. Here are a few things we consistently order.....Apps: Tomato/artichoke quiche (light and fluffly and if you're not careful will be your whole meal), best mini brioche buns Chicago has to offer. Cookies decorated as if you expect them to come alive in a cartoon (and yummy too!). Crème brulee (vanilla goodness),... More

I love everything they have, from the croissants and eclairs to the wonderful macaroons. The salted carmel macaroon is the best but they are all good. And the huge croissants are buttery and wonderful. I couldn't keep from stopping in each time we walked by. And the people at the counter were so friendly and helpful. Great stuff.

Ordered a delicious lemon/raspberry yellow cake for 50+ people. Look beautiful. Parking at bakery is tough, we got a $50 ticket, be careful. Lines are long but move fairly quickly, can be elbow to elbow while waiting inside.

Judy Contino, chef-owner, was recently elected to the Chicago Chef's Hall of Fame, a well deserved honor. The baked goods, including many different cakes, macarons, tarts and cupcakes are outstanding. The cafe has a limited, but excellent menu. No one makes better soups. Quiches, salads and sandwiches are also very good. All in all, a great value for delicious food.
