A Hyde Park landmark. Great breakfast food, an enviable assembly line, and a cashier who knows his clients, chats amiably and makes sure you have everything that you need. Highly diverse clientele and week end regulars who greet you and your family on your frequent visits to Chicago. Tables are well serviced by attentive bus-staff.

I realized as I took my seat that I hadn't visited Valois in more than 10 years; no particular reason ... I just hadn't! What I know for sure that I'll likely be going back within 10 days!!! Valois is a not so hidden treasure!

The menu is pretty basic cafeteria stuff so don’t expect grand dining. However, there is a good atmosphere, is affordable and will go down in history as a favourite of Barack Obama’s. The other stand out feature is the guy who takes your order. He doesn’t write anything down, remembers everything and makes sure that you get the food you... More

Pretty basic fare, but on the plus side lots of breakfast & lunch staples that are good and hearty, at a decent price. Lots of buzz when we visited.

This is the local diner where my kids live and it lives up to its reputation of being tasty , cheap and plentiful . I will say that it's nothing special but if you want cheap plentiful diner food with Southside vibe and friendly camaraderie, then this is the place for you. The coffee , although not being expresso was... More

This is a cheap, no-frills restaurant where food is served cafeteria style. We went mainly because we heard that Obama likes to eat here, and ended up loving the food. Great delicious breakfast for a great value. I definitely would recommend the steak omelette.

I'd heard such good things about this place. Down home, authentic South Side Chicago. Good, home cooked food. Well, no, not really. It is cafeteria style, which is fine. But the veggies all come from a can, the beef was seriously overdone, it was just not very good. But, hey, what do I know? The line stretched forever. People clearly... More

There really is no other place in Chicago like Valois Restaurant in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. The only place that I know of where you can sit with a perfect stranger and feel weirdly comfortable about it - don't get me wrong, you can get your own table but it's quite normal to share a table at this... Usually I will go there for a brunch when I am out of milk at home. Very affordable. But everything is too big there, too much calories intake. Cash only.

We went down there on New Year Evening (Jan. 1, 2017) around 6:30. We walked to the restaurant as we were staying in town. There is nothing real special about Valois from an environment standpoint but it is the food and prices that will drive you in. The steak (medium) with eggs and potatoes and coffee was right at $10.... More

Staying in Hyde Park

Neighbourhood Profile
Hyde Park
If you want to get a feel for quintessential South Side Chicago, you have to make a stop in Hyde Park, one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods. This historic area is home to two of the city’s most prominent cultural institutions, the Museum of Science and Industry and the University of Chicago. A stroll here will bring you past vintage and grand hotels converted into luxury apartment buildings; peaceful gardens, parks and green spaces; and ivy-adorned museums and other cultural institutions that speak to the city’s diversity and architectural beauty.
