I'd had a craving for German Cuisine lately and found the perfect spot. It was a bit late in the day for lunch, but too early for dinner. My selection was The Wurst (Sausage) Platter with sauerkraut and spaetzle. Attentive service and delicious food. When...I'd finished eating I chatted briefly with my server. Very relaxing atmosphere. An Apple Strudel Slice was the perfect dessert to conclude my meal. I highly recommend a visit to this charming spot for a hearty/filling meal of some really outstanding German food.More
I was in the area the other day. I love liver dumpling soup and had noticed it on the menu. We ordered soup to go. It was delicious! Lots of liver dumplings and a very tasty broth. The side of bread was very good, too....We had never eaten here before, but we will be back to try more food.More
My wife and I have been here many times. We have also brought many of our friends. Everyone has loved this little place. The owner, Renate, does all the cooking. Their Schnitzel (Pork or Chicken) is thin with a wonderful taste. It is never dry. Try...it 'a la Holstein' style with two sunny side up eggs. The Rahm Schnitzel with mushroom gravy is also wonderful. Want beef, the Rouladen melts in your mouth. Wonderful flavors. The Sauerbraten has that wonderful sweet/sour taste. They make a wonderful "Wurst" (Sausage) plate. Not sure what to try, go for the sample platter. It has Wurst, Sauerbraten, Schnitzel, and a Gulasch bowl, along with Sauerkraut and Red Cabbage. Which brings us to the sides. I love the Sauerkraut, Red Cabbage, and Roasted Potatoes. Renate sometimes has homemade "machers' which are always good. But it's the homemade Spaetzle (tiny dumplings) that i love. I also love the homemade soups. We have only been there for lunch and diner. I here the breakfast is very good. Note that Renate does do cooking classes for small groups. My wife and 7 friends did a Apple Strudel class they everyone enjoyed. This is a tiny place, usually busy, that is in a strip mall. There is plenty of parking.More
The Rahm Schnitzel was very well prepared! Great seasoning and crunch. The salad with pickled tomatoes and cucumbers were excellent as well. This is a great find in the suburbs. It would be a great Oktoberfest celebration. I highly recommend this place and hope to...visit again.More
This place offers great German family style dining in a comfortable casual setting. You can enjoy dumplings, meat dishes, potatoes and amazing dessert items. They even have a party room for group events. The owner and employees are so kind and helpful. Great for lunch...or dinner. They serve wine and beer tooMore
German food like my mother used to make. Rich sauces, good fried potatoes and good soups. Wrap it up with their homemade desserts.
The wife and I were here for breakfast around the first of December and said that we wanted to come back and try the dinner menu. We were certainly glad we did. We stopped by on Tuesday night and both our dishes were excellent. We...are both a bit sorry that we had not found this restaurant a bit earlier. There is no doubt that we will be back! It may be a bit to their disadvantage that the location of the restaurant is not on the major road so I think they may loose a bit of business due to that. Many would not know it was here. Well worth finding it. A must stop if you are in the area!More
Excellent authentic German food! I was stationed in Germany a number of years and visit friends there every year...the quality of the food at Olde Salem Cafe is just like being in Deutschland. The portions are huge, flavorful, and just delicious!!! It should be called...“Olde Salem German Cafe!”More
My wife and I had never been here before and wanted to try this location since we have known it was here for some time. The wife had scrambled eggs, bacon and toast and I had French Toast. Both dishes were very good and we...certainly would have no problem coming here again. We checked out the dinner menu and that was very appealing as well. Looks like we have some return trips in our future. Excellent stop, a must stop for you if you are in the area!More
Took my wife there last Thursday night. First time we had visited this restaurant. Great home cooked food. we loved it and will be back very soon.
A family restaurant with delicious German and other foods. The white brat with mustard and the potato salad were very good. The liver dumpling soup was especially good. Good service and good price for a very good meal.
Wonderful German dishes made in house. Schnitzel, spaetzle, rouladen, sauerbraten, sausages, salads. Apple pancakes, omlettes, roasted potatoes. Yum. Good service by great people.
Hubby and I found this place through the Yelp community and decided to give it a try. The restaurant looked like it had no seating at first glance, because the entrance with the bakery counter is on the left, but the seating is on the...right side in another store-front window. There is a bunch of pictures on the wall of their entrees, so if you aren’t sure what something is, check it out. The restaurant is not very big, but very open and inviting. Service was very friendly and quick with her getting my Coke fairly quickly. Of course, there was only one other patron in the restaurant at the time, so it should have been quick. Hubs ordered the schnitzel cordon bleu and I ordered the plain schnitzel both orders were with the roasted potatoes. First came the bread. Very soft and fresh. Then came the signature salad, which was some fresh spring greens, a pile of cucumbers and some sliced tomatoes. There was a balsamic vinaigrette that was just delicious on the greens. Then came the oh so good schnitzel. They were two large browned on the outside with a nice crunchy coating. I thought mine was really good, without any embellishments. Hubby’s cordon bleu was “yum, yum, yum” in his words. Um, ok, could you be more descriptive, I said??? It was a delicate balance between crisp and tenderness without being overly charred. The meat was moist and the ham and swiss cheese on top made the dish very tasty. The potatoes were browned nicely with the onions and flavoring making each bite flavorful and moist. We did get dessert to go and we had one win and one loss. Stay. Away. From. The cookies. I am a die-hard shortbread and butter cookie lover. I bought a package of cookies, with about 7 different types of cookies. Or so I thought. I never knew you could make a cookie that tasted like eating a cardboard, flavorless cracker with some flavoring on it. It was that bad. There was no butter, sugar or vanilla taste to these. Maybe I am not used to eating German cookies, but they literally tasted like terribly flavored crackers. On the other hand, the chocolate pudding in a cup was really good. It had layers of creamy pudding with thick layers of whipped cream in it. I would get that again. The total bill was a little more than I figured it would be at $42.00 without tip.More
Tucked away in a small strip mall in Hanover Park is a small restaurant called Olde Salem Cafe. Specializing in honesty let German foods and fresh bakery items they serve up yummy meals. They also offer special occasion catering as well. You can't open wrong.
