Not Like I Remembered

Stopped in at Irving's today for the first time in about 10 years. Growing up in Skokie, I used to frequent Irving's quite a bit even after it moved to Wilmette. Today's visit was a little disappointing. Seems like they're trying to make up for lost business during the COVID era. I paid over $24 for lunch for my son and I. I ordered a gyro with fries and a drink and he ordered a double cheesburger with fries and drink. My gyro came with ONLY four slices of meat. I actually went back inside and questioned if I had a complete sandwich. The manager did offer me some extra meat so I accepted. If I had taken this order to go and got home to eat it, it would have been a whole different review. Just really seemed like it was a lower quality experience than I remembered from my younger days. Dining tables were only available outside in front, no indoor seating.

You can't go wrong with any of the food you order here! I got the Italian sausage sandwich today and the seasoned fries today and both were good.

Polish Dogs - Delish!

We have gone here for over 20 years and the quality hasn't changed - delicious and available with everything... sauerkraut, jalapenos, mustard, ketchup... and more.

Gruff on the phone. Fries were cold and stale. Chili cheese burger was ordinary with a burnt UFO I had to spit out. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. So much better elsewhere.

Making a visit

I used to stop here for carry-out lunch once a week when I was working nearby. Retired one year, I hadn't been back. Recently I found myself in the vicinity at about lunch time and stopped in. The man behind the counter was pleased to see me and still remembered my standard order of a dog and fries. He chatted me up about my retirement, remembered that I was writing science fiction and was extremely personable. I promised that if he bought one of my novels, I'd come back and autograph it for him. Since he doesn't have my email address, now I have an excuse to come back again.

An "A" dog joint.

As a Chicago dog joint goes, this one gets an "A". These fellows know what their doing, and they've been at it for at least 25 years. It's all basic guy food. Fast. Tasty. No frills. (And, for gosh sake, no ketchup on the dogs.) Also, clean and well managed. I'm partial to their sloppy joes. Give 'em a try. What calories? Who cares? Just shut up and eat.

We don't get it

This place has been around forever apparently, so there must be an audience. On our visit, we tried to find the charm of the place. We conclude that there isn't any. The food is marginal at best, the cheese fries are criminal in execution and the place just looks disorganized. It must be living on past glory. We don't get it.

Continues to slide downhill

Been coming every once in a while for over thirty years and each time the place is more run down, worn and dirty...... the food is average for most Chicago style hot dog stands but there is no enthusiasm or ambiance. Head to Poochies to see how Irving's used to be......

Saw the place when I was waiting for my deep dish from Lou's , stopped in the next night. Great hot dog Chicago style. Great price and I was set ! Fun stop !

good place for 'burgers & dogs

There aren't that man places to get hot dogs, and I'm glad Irving's is keeping alive the tradition of a good hot dog. I enjoyed a few of their other locations as well, back in the day when there were several Irving's in the area (I wish they'd bring them back!).

Unhealthy food

Not bad for what it is, but eating there too often is not healthy, however good. The service is fast and not very friendly. They play to a fast food group who are in a hurry.
