Bottom line: too expensive for what you're getting with food, drink, and the overall experience. Read on for more details. The restaurant exterior is unassuming and is attached to other businesses in a mini-strip mall layout. The strip mall has a row of parking right in front but if that is full (which it likely always is) there is parking... More

I had high expectations, but the reality was less than what I had hoped for and certainly less than what I paid for. For the price one would expect a lot. Very expensive place to eat. I had the squash stew; a dull soup. It was paired with a sparkling wine, interesting. The fluke was very good. If I had... More

Wife and I dined here on a semi-whim, making reservations earlier in the day for a Saturday evening. Consistently the best restaurant in Indianapolis in our humble opinions- not only have we never been disappointed in a meal, we have yet to be disappointed in a course! We eat here a couple of times a year generally- the tasting menu... More

A friend in culinary school claims this is the best restaurant in Indy. It is definitely in the top 5. Don't let the strip mall destination deter you. It's dining and wine at it's finest. We had the fixed price menu with wine pairing. The wines were divine and the food was beautiful and delicious. I've read complaints about portion... More

What an unexpected, amazing dining experience. I was in Indianapolis on business, and had previously read some nice things about Greg Hardesty, the chef/owner. Honestly, when I first pulled up to the out-of-the-way, somewhat run-down strip of stores where Recess is located, I was unsure as to whether or not I had found the right place. Immediately when I walked... More

If this restaurant would just work a bit on the horrible acoustics and change to some comfortable seating, we would patronize it twice as often, would even come with business associates. But.... The kitchen is still one of the best in town, if not the best. Still waiting for the first misstep. For those of you who wish to have... More

We had dinner there during the midtown chow down-- limited menu,$35 per person . Kind of minimalist , industrial decor, but pleasant . The service was excellent , but slower than we like. My wife had the halibut and I had the pork loin. Both were excellent ; however the portions were ridiculously small. The salads were wonderful , the... More

The Recess has been providing outstanding culinary delights for over six years! The wine pairings are a great dinner compliment. The background provided by the sommelier on the various wines was in plain English, enthusiastically delivered and very helpful to our novice group. Allison the lead chef was very courteous and joined our table for a well deserved thank you!

We went here during a trip to the Indy 500. The food was very good, the service attentive. We did the prix fixe and the wine flight. The seared tuna lettuce wrap was interesting the french onion soup was delicious. The halibut with sweet onion and morels was a standout, excellent. The beef strip was fine but a bit underdone,... Perhaps the finest restaurant in Indianapolis, this distinguished restaurant doesn't immediately seem inviting. It is in a nondescript shopping plaza with limited parking. Once inside, though, you are transported to a chic urban experience. The food is creative and reflects local availability. You must have a reservation as it is packed. But you don't seem rushed. The wait staff is... More
