The fish was lightly battered and very tasty. I was on my way home from Truro so I did a 'take out" .... it was still hot when I got it home 1 hr away and not at all soggy which usually happens with fish...and chips. I'll definitely be back!!More
Being that we are about 2 1/2 hours away, we go to Masstown Market about once every other year. I always heard great things from the "Catch of the Bay" restaurant/take-out and had always wanted to eat there. It was always too busy, so we...never did until this time, when it was not as busy. My husband and I were pretty excited and hungry, so we both ordered the 2 piece fish and chips. It was ready very quickly and looked amazing. 2 giant fillets of haddock on a bed of fries in a cardboard box. The portion was huge, could have went with the 1 piece and had enough. Well, I wish I had only bought the one piece, since that is all I could muster to eat. The fries were great, but the fish tasted old and super salty. I like salt, but this was too much. I would not eat here again. I expected better from what I had heard of the place.More
I hate to write a bad review but I have no choice as I emailed the management regarding the issue but they never even bothered acknowledging my emails. We have been going to this place for several years. We love their clams and chips and...it was worth the drive from Halifax. I noticed a steady change in the portion size of clams from last year. I guess they took the pandemic as an opportunity to sky rocket the price and serve the smallest portions possible. I was there 3 weeks ago and ordered clams and chips. The box was filled with fries and probably 9 clams in it. We felt totally ripped off and contacted the management regarding this. No one cared to respond. Will never be back. Tried Dianne's take out in Five Islands. It is a bit more drive but absolutely worth it.More
We make the long drive here a couple of times a year as we always loved the food.
I have previously reviewed it and gave it glowing praise...not today (July 6,1200 noon)
First,I was ordering and saw a young lady putting out the little containers...filled with the coleslaw . 4 filled containers fell on the floor, she picked them up from floor and put them back on the counter with the other filled ones...gross! Someone will get those in their Fish and Chip orders. She didnt even wash her hands afterwards...during a Pandemic no less.
We then noticed ,when picking up our order, the condiments are outside on the ledge..where sick or infected people could be placing their hands all over these..again Gross!
The fries were awful..pale and soggy..not one was nice and crisp.Could not eat any.
The batter was different from last year..not nearly as good.Coleslaw horrible
We threw the majority of our food away.
We loved this place in previous years..sooo disappointed .We won"t be back.. too far of a drive for a mediocre meal and poor hygienic practices of staffMore
Masstown is a mega market at an intersection on The trans canada highway near Truro. We pulled in to have lunch. The big chip truck operation across the parking lot caught our eye so we walked over and ordered 2 large orders of fries, and...2 small coleslaws.
While waiting we could see this is on a larger scale than a mere chip truck. An elevated deck surrounds the cooking facility (built to resemble a chip wagon, albeit shaped like a fishing boat). On the deck are 8 or so permanent tables with umbrellas. Next door is a full scale seafood shop selling a very wide range of seafood. Operated by the same group that runs the chip truck.
The 2 large orders with coleslaw came out. Hot, yes. But the portions, in spite of what other reviews have said, were very disappointing. For $4.99, an order should be piled high, a rounded pile that makes it impossible to close the box lid. Not so here. We could easily close the lid without damaging a single fry. Looking in, there were empty gaps in the corners. I took my untouched order back to the cashier and pointed out that this was a puny order for the price charged. He did not respond - just looked at me.
Now, if the fries had been of exceptional quality, which at the very least means fresh cut on the premises, I would not have been too upset. But they were clearly frozen, right off the Sysco truck, or maybe Costco. When I asked, he admitted they were frozen fries. How can you charge $5 for a smallish order of frozen fries? The coleslaw? The clear plastic container was so small I had to chuckle.
It truly makes you wonder “Where did the fish come from?” I know of a number of genuine fish and chip places within an hour or so of Masstown. Next time through here I’ll be stopping elsewhere.More
We come here each year with the family while camping in the area. The serving size is quite the feast and the fish battered but still flaky inside. I do miss the old glass bottles they use to sell and now they've gone to vending...machines. Wish they would have Cod on the menu all the time. The day they do have it always sold out.More
We found this place accidentally as we were going to check out Masstown Market and decided to have lunch.
The fish chips were great! The battered fish was more than plenty for a serving and very tasty. You can ask them for some tartar sauce...if you don't have enough.
The chips were "okay" but the fish itself was filling so it didn't bother me much. It's also on top of a repurposes boat, which is pretty cool.
I can see that this place gets crazy busy if tourist buses come along so you may want to avoid or adjust your timing if so. I would t wait longer than 20 mins for foodMore
