No expectations coming here. 1st time, close to work. This meat was tender, good smoke, the sauce was not great but above average. This would be a top BBQ restaurant in any other city. Come here and try it for the people alone. They are 5 stars. Might be in my top 10 in KC. Come give it a shot.... More

I wouldn't say that the food was bad here. It just was not what i had hoped for. The burnt ends were too burnt as in they were crispy, dry and no flavor.beyond that delicate balance for burnt ends. The ribs were tender and very meaty they were pretty good I think if i had asked for some dry rub... More

Always like to try a different place each time we visit the area. Our group tried the ribs, burnt ends and brisket. All were extremely tender and the ribs and burnt ends smelled like they had just come off the wood fired grill. The brisket was a bit lacking in flavor but with the sauces made a tasty sandwich. The... More

I stopped at Hayward's for lunch during a recent business trip. My associate and I reasoned - rightly - that it would be wrong to visit Kansas City and not have BBQ. We really lucked out. Hayward's is a very unpretentious locale (I'm pretty sure that Boss Hog's place in the Dukes of Hazard was modeled on it). There is... More

You go to this type of restaurant for the meat and the ribs and burn ends were outstanding. The brisket was tender but kind of bland. While the meat is great, the fries were not that great-mealy and undercooked, and the beans had too much of one spice possibly celery. I would certainly go back for the burnt ends. Delicious.... This place is great, but a little expensive. Their pulled pork is really good and so are their ribs! Sauce is great! We ordered the large meal with the burnt ends and really enjoyed everything!

Hidden away in Lenexa is this hidden delicacy bbq place. It's very small and unassuming. It was a nice sunny Sunday and my husband and I decided to sit outside. He ordered a sausage burger and I a burnt ends and ribs platter. Both were delicious. The creamy corn bake is indeed like "candy" as our waitress described. Small place... More

Great little BBQ place that provided generous portions and great friendly service. Each person in my group had something different and everyone said it was great and they would return.

Pretty good ribs. Rib night might not be the best night for first visit because I am sure they push out a lot in a short time. I would go back.

Haywards was considered a very good BBQ stop years ago. It was great to see they're back under new ownership. The ribs are very meaty and not greasy. Burnt ends excellent. Very good onion rings and beans. They are a little hard to find but worth the effort. The place is a regular old style roadhouse joint. Enjoy!

Description
A Barbeque restaurant, that was established in 1972, by Hayward Spears Sr. We specialize in smoke meats, most notably, burnt ends, which have been declared Best Burnt Ends, by the Kansas City Bar-B-Que Society. We are a dine-in or carry-out restaurant that will also cater any special occasion. The owner, Eric Sweeney, grew up in Overland Park, Kansas. He worked for Hayward when he was a teen-ager, stoking the hickory wood fire. He purchased the restaurant in 2014, with the intention of bringing Hayward's back to it's Heyday and has been successful at doing so. Stop by the smoke house in the back of the restaurant to say hello, or talk about Bar-B-Que. Bar-B-Que is his lifetime passion, so you may get an earful!
