We were staying at The Lord Crewe in Blanchland and decided to book a meal at The Rat as a nostalgic trip for my dad who visited the pub in the 60s. The meal was the best of all our trip around the North East....More

The rain was hammering down and the car park comprises grass verges or gateways or anywhere else you can find (the actual car park, being quite small, was quite full). We booked here on the basis of a favourable review in the Daily Telegraph, which...More

My brother, my wife and myself visited The Rat yesterday having booked a conservatory room table a couple of days earlier. Upon arrival we were told there was no reservation but we could be given a table in the bar area. I can state unequivocally...More

The Rat Inn is simply brilliant. The ultimate country pub near Hexham. Good range of real ales and FANTASTIC food. Great menu, local products. Staff lovely. Keep winning national awards for food. Lovely views down Tyne valley. Big garden area. Brilliant pub.

The Rat never fails to impress. Despite being busy, shows the local reputation, service was good not in your face or too slow. Steaks were great, locally sourced as usual. The rabbit and herb risotto very locally sourced was definitely a recipe one would like...More

We have wanted to try The Rat for quite some time and it definitely didn't disappoint. Although it has a very small blackboard menu you can see all your typical gastro pub dishes, at a fair price, using locally sourced ingredients! It's got a lovely...More

We called in here for lunch after a recommendation. The staff were very welcoming and even though they were clearly full, they squeezed us in. The food was fresh, fantastic, amazing local quality and served with a big smile. We drove 40 minutes from our...More

Visited on a Saturday lunchtime. Booked a table which probably was necessary as the restaurant was relatively busy. Good choice of well kept beers. Apparently the menu varies daily, but what we had was truly and universally delicious. One of the best pub meals I...More

Little rural pub flourishing on great service, ales and gastro standard cuisine. If you are a meat lover , then you are sure to go for a steak- each cut of beef in the kitchen weighed, priced and chalked on the board for you to...More

Yes you can, though it's uphill and not (the first part anyway) very scenic as you'd have to leave Hexham via the industrial estate! I did it the other way on my nephew's stag night a few years back! Robert
