My wife and I went here on Thursday, August 6th for our fourth wedding anniversary. We sat outside, wore our masks to our table, and had a tremendous view of the water with a delightful (southern) wait person. We live nearby, and had never been...here before.
I'm going to pause this review to be real and honest. Maine is filled with some amazing places like this. Historic, august, time-honored places that have a reputation and a steady stream of folks that come in, year after year. HOWEVER, I've been disappointed in some of them because their reputations and ambiance seem to be better than the food, service, and drinks. I was wary. Was the Village Inn and Tavern just going to be a cute place in Belgrade, or was I missing out all of this time?
Here's the answer: I AM AN IDIOT! GO HERE IMMEDIATELY,
Ok, sorry for the all caps, but this place blew me away.
The drinks, we had four, were tasty, well-made, and perfectly portioned. The flavors of each one were careful and subtle without being tourist-boozy.
We had the calamari and clam chowder (you have to get these right) and they were delicious. The soup made me want more soup. I don't really eat soup. The calamari was perfectly crunchy and spicy, with the right amount of peppers added.
My wife had the seafood pasta selection which was delicious and perfect. I had the steak special and they graciously allowed me a different side, since I didn't like gnocchi which came with it. My wife was angry that I didn't like gnocchi. The waitress and, presumably, the kitchen was not.
Finally, here's the cherry on top...literally. We were so full, we couldn't do dessert, but the staff still brought us some sweets to take home, all wrapped up. The extra mile.
We'll go back. We were dumb to wait so long to go, This place delivered and was great.More

Dennis, thank you so much for this wonderful and thoughtful review! We are so pleased you enjoyed the food and atmosphere here at the lake and are grateful you took the time to say so! I hope to meet you when you next return to...More
Be sure to call first for reservations! Once your there, enjoy all they have to offer from excellent meals, inside dining as well as outside dining along the beautiful Belgrade stream while listening to Maine's best musical performers. The view of the famous Belgrade Stream...is relaxing, boats coming in and the wait staff is super friendly and efficient.More
We've been visiting this restaurant for many years and with various owners. Our most recent visit this summer was even better than usual. The food (duck for sure and a few other choices by some in the group) were all excellent as was the service.
The Village Inn and Tavern is in a gorgeous location and is a very charming space. The restaurant was charming and the food -- we had the duck and two salads -- was delicious. The servers were also lovely, as were the hosts at the...front desk.
The inn for our overnight stay was fine, but not ideal. Our room 7 was in a neighboring building that housed what looked like 10 or so rooms on two levels. The room was a three room suite -- two queen bedrooms and a small living room. While somewhat recently renovated, there were some cleanliness issues -- spiderwebs, bugs, and the white matlasse coverlet on my bed had several dirty areas, like from dirty hands or feet, as if it hadn't been washed recently. The bathroom is tiny and renovated on the surface -- the turquoise tiles had been painted over with white, but the tub was still turquoise and in need of a good scrub around the grout.
Overall -- it was a pleasant Maine experience, it could be better with a bit of extra care and without extra investment, and we enjoyed our stay.More
Waited for 45 minutes to have even bread brought over and an order to be taken.
Food ok but not worth $203 dinner. That kind of money the ribs should have been tender not tough. Pasta should be fresh. Potatoes should have seasoning. Just a...few scallops in a over priced meal. Ok but not worth the poor service on a Saturday night. Kept having to ask for things like salt and pepper, water, bread and more.
Just not worth the money.More
...because the Village Inn has a difficult challenge. It has to bridge the gap between the tee shirt and flip flops eaters and those looking for fine dining. In trying to serve both audiences, it has made some bad compromises.
The ambiance is country inn,...charming and old. Waitstaff is eager but a bit unfocused. Follow up on our drink order would have been nice.
The menu combinations are odd. A delicate protein of scallops was pared with garlic mashed potatoes. The two don’t work together. The salmon with polenta was very good but adding coleslaw was pointless. The lobster raviolis were quite good but overpowered by pork belly pieces and a heavy, rich sauce. Like the waitstaff, the menu could use focus.
Note to waitstaff, do not remove a diner’s plate while others at the table are finishing theirs. Note to chef, think about a consistent palate and not jarring mixture of tastes and textures that don’t go together.
Dinner with old friends is always excellent. The food was not as good as the company. So definitely some high points that were hurt by the compromises to serve a broader range of tastes.More
Had roasted quarter duck with raspberry sauce, garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. It was all delicious. My only comment would be that I sat in a spot that was very dark with only small candles on the table so I couldn't see what I...was eating and I couldn't read the bill as it was dark outside. I would still recommend it.More
I visited the Tavern after hearing they had fantastic duck dishes. I was disappointed to learn that the Tavern was not open on Mondays or Tuesdays. When I told them I had a pup in my car and was looking for outside, pup friendly dining,...Jennie offered to serve me at the picnic table on the front lawn. My pup Georgia and I had wonderful service from Jennie and several staff. The owner also stopped to say hi to us, that was really nice. Service was great. Duck tenders and burger were delish. Georgia enjoyed her beanpot of water. We’ll be back. 🤗More
