We were here on cheeseburger Monday so I ordered the special of cheeseburger and fries for $6. My husband got a haddock sandwich which was $16.49. He subbed onion rings for an upcharge of $2.25. We each got a cole slaw added for another dollar...each. With one coffee and taxes, our total pre-tip was just over $32. Definitely not a bargain lunch! We were greeted warmly but seated at a two person booth with a completely taped up seat from tears. We moved as it was a tight fit. The next person seated there was a young girl in shorts who complained about how scratchy the tape was. Another pair of people asked to be moved from their booth as the seat back was no longer attached to the wall. Some maintenance is definitely needed. My cheeseburger was ok but had broken in the middle so it was u shaped. The bun was toasted and delicious. I’d gotten it with lettuce and tomato; the lettuce was gritty like it had dirt still on it. The fries were ok. My husband said his meal was ok but nothing more. We’d asked about having breakfast but was told it wasn’t possible because of it being cheeseburger Monday. Yet we saw multiple tables both before and after us being served breakfast. Otherwise, our server was great.More

What a find in expensive coastal Maine, and right across the street from our hotel !! The Hampton Inn provided a list of area restaurants, but spoke highly of Governor's. We were delighted with the extensive menu, great food, pleasant atmosphere, and good service. We...were stunned at the reasonable prices. Consequently, we ate dinner there 4 of the five nights we spent in Ellsworth as we have better things to spend our money on than expensive restaurants which seem to be everywhere in New England!! We found Ellsworth to be a good stay for exploring the Acadia area and westward as far as the western shore of Penobscot Bay.More

We ate here on a wet Saturday evening because it was the nearest restaurant to our hotel and we really enjoyed the experience more than we might have expected. It was busy so there was understandably a 10 minute wait but we were given a...warm welcome by both the host and our server . We had the haddock chowder and a very decently sized glass of wine, both of which were served with very little delay. Whilst most of the menu was not really to our UK taste, as others have observed, it was really popular with locals and we had a very enjoyable meal before making our way back to the hotel in the pouring rain! I would see no reason not to eat here if the menu is to your liking.More

We stopped here on our way out of Bar Harbor to head home. It looked like a place where locals go, which are usually pretty good. Our waitress was very nice and attentive but it couldn’t make up for the overcooked food. The pancakes were...dense, the French toast was ‘dry’, the potatoes had a good taste but were tough & sausage was very fat. (The crispy bacon was good though.) Even their ‘customer favorite’ cinnamon swirl bread was dry. I should have listened to other reviews which were a very generous ‘average’… my fault.More

Governors has a couple of locations in Maine. The food is consistently good. Daily specials are wonderful - fried scallops and lobster rolls are both delicious. Most menu items are very good. Service is usually friendly and at a reasonable speed. Desserts can be seen...in the case when one enters the restaurant and are also very good. Value for what you pay can't be beat, and there are always locals eating here!More

Governor's is a typical Maine diner. Comfortable with comfort food. We happened upon the weekly Friday special of a Fish Fry. The Haddock was a full meal and came with 2 sides for $13. I sprung $2.25 to substitute onion rings for french fries and...had cole slaw as my second side. My wife had the more traditional mashed potatoes/gravy and beets with feta. Both meals were filling and wonderful. The haddock was perfectly fried with light breading and the onion rings are in crumbs. Great meal.More

Ordered online to have food picked up at 6pm. Once I got there of course the food was not ready. I had to ask 3 times how much longer it was going to be before someone finally went back to get my meal. I ordered...a turkey club sandwich with fried. Fries were cold, dark brown and hard. Club sandwich was soggy and tasteless. I tried adding mayo to the sandwich using the packets they gave me and that was a mistake. Mayo was separated and came out as a watery mess. I threw away the whole meal. When I got there 6 workers were more worried about cleaning up the mess they made when they spilled cherries than they were in the customer's. I will never again order from the "restaurant".More

I got a cookie for the road -- a date-filled molasses one, which is something you don't typically see. Healthy, too, which eliminates some of the guilt factor. They had a nice selection of pastries -- cookies, pies, cakes, etc.

We didn't realize this was a chain, and we certainly didn't realize it would be so mediocre. The service and employees were friendly. The prices were too high for mediocre food. The blueberry muffin was sticky and old. The pie was mass-produced and made up...for nuance with lots of sugar. The shrimp were okay with cups of mass-produced cocktail sauce. We left 90% of the luke-warm meatloaf when we left.More

Most of the food that we had was good. I would not recommend the pot roast. It looked like something served in a nursing home, served in water and was extremely salty. The waitress rarely came to our table, never asked us how things were,...and always left our table quickly so did not have an opportunity to say anything. The desserts we got to go were amazing.More

let's start off with when my wife and I first walked in. we were not greeted and no one had hardly looked our way. there was a woman behind the counter seeming to do everything by herself and she was the only one who greeted...us after a while... the staff never stopped once to help her or take care of us. when we were finally sat, our server was kind and friendly which was a breath of fresh air. unfortunately that was the only good part about our evening. we heard a lot of chatter and gossip with the wait staff and cashier's where the computers are... one girl, who I am not sure of the name of with short blonde hair, glasses, and a golden chain necklace, was making my wife and I EXTREMELY uncomfortable with the words she was saying about staff that worked there... there was also a LOT of swearing. I felt like I was in a BAR... all we could hear from the kitchen and out back was swear after swear. my wife and I are proud Christians and this put a sour note to our evening. and finally, the food. my wife had ordered steak tips medium rare and asked for no onions, mashed potatoes and gravy, and rice. what she got was well done tips with onions, potatoes with no gravy, and drier than dry rice. I got two slices of meatloaf with stuffing and mashed potatoes. The gravy was crusty like it had been sitting too long, the meatloaf was burned and dry, and a PATHETIC and dry half helping of stuffing. the kitchen nor servers seemed to have any pride in their work at ALL. we will definitely NOT be coming back!!!More

Really disappointed by our breakfast. The blueberry and the chocolate chip pancakes had very little of them in either and they were so brown they almost tasted burnt. The side of bacon was two pathetic pieces about 4-5 inches long and stiff as a board....The service wasn't prompt or attentive. I never tip under 20%, today I did.More
