One of my favorite restaurants in Portland. I have had brunch here several times and love the roast special especially the mushroom gravy. I finally had the opportunity to have dinner and I was disappointed. The goulash was excellent! Everthing is always fresh and homemade. Being able to bring along a bottle of wine keeps the price down. Highly recommended!

We go there regularly for brunch and supper. Limited menu but wonderful tastes and the owner and staff are always very friendly. A truly hidden gem in Portland.!

Schulte & Herr delivers authentic fare at a reasonable price. Despite a somewhat awkward location, once you step into the cozy dining room you're at home with your German relatives. Our party of 5 ordered 2 zwiebelkuchen (onion & gruyere tart) and each of the 2 potato pancake starters (1 with smoked salmon, 1 with applesauce). These were perfectly enjoyable,... More

I went here on a reservation with three friends on Easter for their standard brunch. Three of us had been before: I love this place. Sure, the single-roomed small restaurant is plain, with adequate but not awesome seating, the art on the walls is amateurish and there's nothing fancy here..... but the service and food is excellent. About 10 tables... More

Having lived in Germany for two years and speaking the language, I had been wanting to try this Portland restaurant about which we'd heard good things. We were well received by a pleasant waitress who alerted us to the fact that had no license and were BYO if we wanted wine or beer with our meal. After ordering, I ran... More

Funky German small 9 table restaurant with an eclectic mix of furniture. This BYOB German restaurant tucked away on Cumberland ave. offers authentic German fare. The always smiling and friendly owner Steffi waited on us on a cold Thursday in March. Shortly after open we were the first to be seated, a few patrons came in later. We had wanted... More

Went here for brunch. This is flat out authentic German food. There are options (scrambled eggs, omelette) for people who aren't that adventurous, but I highly recommend the German food. Sundays they do a traditional roast, it varies from week to week, it's the real deal and will remind you of your German/Central European grandmother's cooking. However, equally as good... More

There is a great void in New England when it pertains to German food. No self respecting German would feed what most New Englanders refer to as sausage to their chickens, That said I can only say I have found a place that can satisfy my craving for the food I grew up with and came to enjoy first hand... Very cute little restaurant with authentic German food. Everything is prepared right at the kitchen that you can look into. The owners run and operate their little "gem" and put lot's of pride and joy into the food. The "zwiebelkuchen" and "spaetzle" were my fovorite. And the chocolate cake was to die for. Bring your own alcoholic beverages.

My wife and I lived in Germany for four years when stationed there with the US Army. We are always looking for German restaurants because we loved the food so much. Our daughter lives in Portland and had been here a couple of times with her girlfriend so we gave it a try last week while visiting. We were not... More
