This restaurant I have been to twice. The first time left me in awe. The second time 10 years later was a reunion of taste. The freshness and the emotion in this food is a treat to a true foodie. I would gladly recommend this...place to all. The service is perfect. They give you space without leaving you high and dry. The way the food comes out and the timing of the food reaching a table is perfect!!! This place is magical.More

Never thought that a small town in Maine would be home to such an amazing restaurant! Not only is the food delicious, the menu is so well rounded with foods both traditional and unexpected, we would have liked to taste everything on the menu if...we could eat so much. The stuffed poblano was succulent, the potato pierogi the best we have ever had (and we have had pierogi in authentic Polish restaurants before). The short ribs were falling off the bone, with creamy mashed potatoes, the chicken wings fingerlicking good. All dishes we tried were very flavorful and perfectly seasoned. After eating like kings, what topped everything was the unbelievable cheesecake with pecan praline. The creaminess and flavor of the cheesecake has me now searching for a similar taste bud experience since, but nothing compares even here in my home city of New York! The food quality and menu are only matched by the friendliness and professionalism of the staff, in particular our host and waiter Paul. He took time to explain the items on the menu and detail, had interesting conversation with us about Waterville and beyond, and was a pleasure to interact with. Another big plus is that the Last Unicorn is located at a convenient location on a beautiful plaza with outdoor seating in the spring and summer, where we had the pleasure to dine last summer with an equally enjoyable experience; even though, even if at a different location, we would go out of our way to get there. We'll make sure to return every time we are in Maine!More

Four of us were looking forward to dining outdoors at one of our favorite restaurants, after many months of staying at home. We had a wonderful time at The Last Unicorn! Service was excellent, the wait staff wore face coverings and there was plenty of...space between customers. The Edamame Pot Stickers was the most outstanding dish of the evening - absolutely delicious! The drink specials were also memorable. Kudos to the Uni for delivering a great experience at this challenging time! We will definitely return soon.More

Food was decent and served promptly. My big concern was that the server didn't wear a mask. The only other server working outside had a mask on but it didn't cover her nose. Something for future guests to consider.

Let me preface this with a thank you to The Last Unicorn and all the other restaurants that are trying to accommodate the Governor and her mandates. We were grateful to get out of the house and not just to pick up the food! We...were the only ones inside the restaurant. There were 7 outside and the menu was much smaller and understandable so. I ordered my usual-crab cakes with Thai peanut sauce, potatoes and salad. My husband had the salmon, rice and veggie special. And here is where my problem was... we were looking for something for our daughter to eat ( should have stuck to original idea of a burger) and ordered one of the 3 specials. There were no prices and I had inquired about one special... what exactly it was and the price. She didn’t know and we never got an answer! So we ordered the Shepard’s Pie (another special, thinking it would be easy to eat) without the price. We were told it only came with one side because it was a large entire... ok... she can back a while later ( long long wait for our meals even with the lack of customers) to say “no sides” it’s THAT big. Our meals arrive... my husband and mine are good... my daughters is blazing hot ( it comes in a round cast iron pan) and nothing wrong with hot but it took forever to cool... not a real problem. Here’s my small complaint ....when we found out that this meal was $28 ( more than either of the other 2) with no sides and mostly potatoes and peas it was really disappointing. There was so little ground beef in it I really had to search when I was stirring it to try and cool it off for her. I finally put it onto my plate as I had finished. Tip to restaurant...lower the price or add in a side. Was not worth even $20. So our first foray into the world after almost 4 months was ok. People reading this : all the outside sitting is open on the street ( inside too if you want) come on down and help support the restaurant owners just don’t order the Shepard’s pie!More

Went for lunch with a friend. Neither of us had been before. I read the cheese dip was really good so we got some and it was! A bit oily, but the flavor was good, strong. I liked the bread that came with it. I...also had a chef salad which was pretty good. Nothing over the top.More

We arrived between lunch and dinner service which meant no specials available at all. The regular menu had two entrees that could be gluten free. Even though sirloin was on the menu, it was not available. Mashed potatoes were on the menu, but only available...during dinner service. Starters had options, but no gluten free bread, crackers or chips. One order of the smoked salmon was presented beautifully but not with pumpernickel as listed on the menu. The best thing about our experience was the wait staff and the cocktails were spot on. No gluten free desserts at all. Woefully disappointed and we doubt we will return.More

First time here. Waitress seemed pleased and cheerfully recommended the favorite dishes and sauces. 1 of us is celiac and had an amazingly generous chef salad. The salad dressing selection for GF was far superior to most restaurants who may have a couple of vinaigrette...selections. I chose a Green Goddess that was full flavored but not overbearing.. The other half of us was a bit disappointed to get only 1 crab cake for the lunch special. However, it did come with 2 generous sides including perfectly cooked jasmine rice and a very generous house salad. Because it was our first visit and he did not know the sauce choices, our waitress brought all 3 and they were fun. We both enjoyed our meals and would not only recommend it, but plan to return here again.More

The Unicorn is an "icon", still sporting the same menu from ... maybe the 80's? It's a good menu with long standing recipes, so consistency is usually spot on. There's also a rotating daily menu but the recipes on it are also very long-standing. Usually...a shrimp and fish dish with 3 flavor choices, and a dozen others, including some of the best crab cakes I've ever had. The downside is the service. The wait staff has always been fairly unskilled and mediocre here. Some of this is due to the size. Very small, VERY LOUD and a tiny kitchen make for a lot of chaos when things get hectic. So it's not all their fault, but they do need a little work with making people feel like they're valued. All in all a 3.5 out of 5 if I could give a "half star". Above average food, below average atmosphere and service = average experience altogether. Side note: This is the place to get a margarita if you're in the mood for just one. It's a 3-2-1 recipe, 3 parts tequila, 2 parts cointreau (NOT triple sec) and ONE PART lime juice! You can upgrade to a better tequila and this drink will cost anywhere from $10-$13. Possibly the best value in town.More
