While walking around Great Barrington, we stopped here for lunch on a Tuesday. I am always adventurous and Bizen proved to be a nice choice. They have an extensive menu but for lunch we wanted to go light, so bento box it was.

From the moment we walked in the door and smelled that fish odor, we should have turned around. It only went downhill from there. We were a large party and ordered plenty of sushi and cooked food, not one of us thought the food was good. Servers were very nice but very slow. Back to Baba Louies for best pizza... More

I would truly love to meet you Mindy G and treat you to sushi and personally show you the Bizen that 99% of our customers know and love. Because either you think sushi is a California roll with fake crab meat or you've never eaten blue fin tuna and Californian Sea Urchin, Tazmanian Salmon or fresh shucked live scallops. What... More

We stopped in for lunch on a Sunday and put ourselves in entirely in Chef Michael's hands. We gave him a few ideas of things we like (for example uni) and were treated to one spectacular course after another. I could go on and on, but it is best if you experience it for yourself. The little side road location... More

Bizen in Great Barrington, MA offers a wide array of Japanese cuisine served from its summer specials, sushi bar, Robata charcoal grill and Kaiseki menus. Our B&B hostess recommended Bizen and made reservations on a busy weekend in the Berkshires. We were seated near the sushi bar in a dining room that is in need of fresh paint and more... More

Dear Stardustdrive Thank you for taking your precious time to review Bizen and give such a complimentary assessment. I see that you ordered a mix of our contemporary sushi rolls and more traditional noodle dishes concocted by our master Kaiseki chef Mito who prepares cuisine for the Japanese Tea Ceremony called Kaiseki which I would encourage you to reserve the... We have been eating at Bizen since they opened. Tonite we had another wonderful dinner. Salad to start, greens very fresh. We ordered an Omikaze platter. The fish was fresh and flavorful, with large generous pieces of sashimi. It also came with sushi and an interesting roll. Service was attentive. We had a leisurely dinner, enjoying every bite. If you... More

My husband and I visited Bizen last year and enjoyed our food. The restaurant was busy that night and packed with people, but the sushi was unique and tasty, so we planned to take our daughter this year on her day off from working at a camp. Since our visit last year, I was diagnosed and needed to go completely... More

Dear Jill S. I am not writing this response to win you back or make excuses about what happened when you tried to dine with us this Summer. All I can say to you is a big 'I'm sorry' for the total disconnect and miserable experience you had at Bizen. As the owner I take every single guest we have... More

We've been to Bizen a number of times over the years, but this was the first visit with our 8 year old daughter. We reserved one of the Japanese style booths because we knew she would like that. On arrival, we were told that they forgot to reserve the booth for us but there was one table. We asked if... More

Dear scrapplefromtheapple Like your handle, Charlie Parker, I can only compare this disconnect to a great musician being out of sync with his band. I can understand your frustration with not getting your desired table especially trying to please your daughter with our authentic Japanese design, but to deride our cuisine as mediocre as a dis to Bizen is just... Great Service and the value of what you get can't be beat . I had scallops expecting 5 scallops as is common today but when my dish came there where 10 large scallops that were cooked to perfection . .

We happen to have been here for dinner one night and bonus, Chris Noth from Sex and the City dropped in for take out. He had been cited in elsewhere as well. The food is good. Portion size is great. Quality is high and the surroundings are intimate. It's worth going if you have a hankering for Japanese.
