On a snowy December afternoon, a friend of mine and I stopped in for a quick lunch. We had a delicious bowl of chowder and a grilled cheese sandwich. The restaurant is small and consists of picnic style table in addition to smaller two person tables...while this might not be to everyone's taste, I was very comfortable and found the... More

The homemade soups and popovers at the Smithsonian are absolutely delicious. My favorite lunch spot - especially in the winter!

Hi Everyone Look for Smithsonian Chowder House on 1 West Street Hatfield or second location at Roundhouse Plaza in Northampton for great soups and popovers, catering! This location is now Grill n Chill for super American cooking and drinks in a fun neighborhood restaurant setting.

We stopped her on a recommendation. I was worried when they labled themselves a 'Chowder House'. Thankfully, there is much more to this little place. The food is freshly made before your eyes, the staff is very friendly and willing to walk you through the menu and history of the establishment. Our sandwiches were delicious and fresh. The potato salad... More

Very limited menu, with some hot soups and various pre-made salads. The clam chowder is reliably excellent, and be sure to inquire about their freshest cupcake selection.

The Smithsonian just opened another restaturant, in downtown Northampton next to the Bus Station. We ate there yesterday. The cafe appears to be still "under construction" - a woman was painting a lobster mural as we ate. But, they are all set up and ready to go. The two young men who worked there were very friendly. They offered us... More

The Smithsonian Chowder house offers a half dozen soups daily, and often has macaroni and cheese, and a beef chili. The popovers are often overcooked; paninis are bland, but the cupcakes are flavorful and moist. Soups can be packaged up to a gallon. Easy on and off 91, it is a good place to stop if traveling north for a... More

The Smithsonian has relocated to a mile away on Route 5 and is a 'chowder house' and bakery and houses a kitchen that also offers catering off site. This is still Peter Langlois' food. The old location, at 127 Elm St. has some of Peter's staff, even doing the cooking, but they have tweaked the menu a bit. The address... More

My expectations were not unreasonable; maybe the Smithsonion just had a bad day. The place is pretty bare bones, but neat and clean. Counter service with half a dozen small tables - but during my visit most of the business appeared to be for take-out. A nice variety of homemade soups and chowders served in Styrofoam cups, a limited selection... More
