4 of us ordered the trout only to be told they only had 1 due to it being bad- fair enough. She took a half an hour to return to our table to get the other 3 orders. The chicken that one person had tasted...like fish - was it cooked in the same oil as the trout? The indian dish was inedible and the steak dish was tough. The trout and veg were greasy. All of the veg were almost cold. Our reservation was for 6:30 and we got our meals at 7:45. It was expensive and no one was happy with their meal.More

Tucked away north of the ferry just off highway #6. If you are anywhere on the island the meals served here match anything the finest city restaurants can offer!! Yvonne & Cam

Wish I could give more stars but some of the food was a huge let down. Our starters of tapenade and trout fish cakes were good. Our mains of trout and a fillet steak were also good but the vegetable sides were awful. Cold and...tasteless with not a hint of seasoning. Such a shame as the Gardens Gate is a cosy place that offered so much but let us down.More

Lovely location, beautiful gardens, quaint atmosphere, Manitoulin souvenirs for purchase. The food was good but pricey and portions were small. I ordered the polenta which consisted of three small slices of polenta, some tomato sauce and a few olives. It was over $20 for maybe...$2 worth of ingredients, and I was still hungry. My friends had the schnitzel and laketrout and their portions were small as well. Everyone had room for dessert and we still needed a bedtime snack. Meals for three people without dessert was $150 before tip.More

This place is worth stopping at on your way to or from the ferry in South Baymouth. Service is friendly and the food is pretty good. Very quaint and pleasant setting in the countryside. No liquor license. No wine nor beer.

We enjoyed a fantastic meal here while on the Island. Beautiful farmstead property turned restaurant with delicious farm-to-table food, locally sourced... right down to the water! We had the chicken schnitzel and spaetzle, very good! Also recommend you try one of the flavored sparkling waters...they make themselves. Recommend a stop here!!More

We frequently dined at the Garden's Gate Restaurant over the past ten years but this was our first visit to it under the new management. The exterior looked much the same but the gardens did need a bit more care. The interior of the restaurant...was largely unchanged in layout, however the settings were somewhat sparse. Gone were the set tables, tablecloths, napkins and flowers, replaced by cutlery wrapped in cheap paper napkins. It looked and felt more like a low grade diner than the former fine dining ambiance of the past. Once we were seated we asked to see the liquor menu only to be told that they do not serve liquor, wine or beer. The waitperson explained that they had applied for a liquor license in 2020, but had not heard back from the government since applying. What?? They applied in 2020, but had not followed up with the licensing body. Very strange indeed. We asked for water and it arrived at the table in tall bottles, that formerly had screw caps on them, sort of like mini ketchup bottles. Odd to say the least and not very classy at all. They then brought a small tray of bread for four people, but there were no bread plates to be had. Just how were we to butter our bread and where were we to keep it in between bites. The bread was very unremarkable and a bit on the stale side. So far we were not very impressed. The four of us then ordered our dinner of whitefish, which used to be in the former restaurant a culinary delight. Our meal arrived in a bit and the fish was mediocre at best. Mine was noticeably thinner than the other three servings and it was over-cooked. The fish was served with a large portion of white rice and some vegetables but the fish was draped over the rice, imparting a fish flavour to the rice. Not my idea of how rice should be served. The vegetables were cooked reasonably well. There was no salt or pepper on the table and I had to get them from a nearby shelf. We finished our meal and then ordered tea. My wife and I ordered black tea and that was served in a pot. One of our friends ordered an herbal tea which was served with a tea bag in the cup, but no saucer and so no place to put the teabag. It had to be dumped on the table when the tea had brewed, as there was no place else to put it. The owners need to take a course in restaurant management, as what they are offering as a dining experience and at the prices they are asking is well below accepted quality standards and very far below the level of what the former Garden's Gate owners offered to the dining public. It is very unfortunate as there are so few restaurants on the island that offer a good dining experience. All in all it was a very disappointing dining experience for our group and we all decided that we would not return again.More

We stopped in for a Sunday brunch. We chose a few items off the menu, all of which were super tasty and very fresh. The coffee was fresh and piping hot. Service was prompt and very friendly. Overall, a great meal, albeit a bit small....If you have a large appetite, consider ordering an extra dish to fill out your meal.More

We turned up without a booking on their first open Sunday of the season. Despite being a little short-staffed the lady running things was friendly and did a good job of serving us in a timely manner. The food was delicious and the menu appealing.

We were on our way to checkout the location of the ferry, and decided to find a place to get a meal as well. Happily, Google Maps reminded me of The Garden's Gate. Found it easily, a wonderful little garden oasis, so comfortable! The interior...is quite spacious, and we were able to have our meal inside, plenty of space between guests / tables. As others have said, the atmosphere is homey, with great local artwork on the walls. I think you can see the gardens from any of their numerous windows, or sit outside in the gardens. Service was quick and very friendly, as well, they were able to accommodate my dairy allergy without any fuss. We both decided to have the Trout Burger and share the GG's Seasonal Salad, sooooo good, all the greens and herbs in the salad are directly from their garden, including the Nasturtium flowers!More

We were looking for an option to tour Manitoulin Island and found this interesting place online. Went to their website and ordered a take away picnic basket early in the morning for pickup. Ordering was a breeze and picked up a delicious picnic “basket” with...cured meats, dill spread, baba ganoosh, bread, pickles, olives, etc. later that same day. Got a great recommendation for a picnic spot and had a most memorable day. Would highly recommend their basket option and look forward to dinner!More

It was raining and we were hungry and decided to stop here. Food was excellent. We were happy to eat some healthy food as well as we were traveling and that isn't always easy. The establishment and setting are nice, with nice flowers as you...enter the place. Owner was super nice and positive. Would definitely go back.More
