smallish menu for tapas. Everything is delicious, but too many prepared with pork, so is limiting. Noisy and uncomfortable seating, Pricey, but a hip and popular place

My wife and I visited before a play at DPAC, short walk from the area parking garages, and easy walk to the theater after dinner. Everything we ate was delicious. Pricing seemed reasonable. We were there on a snowy night where it didn't seem busy, I do worry how service would be if it was packed. Tapas is a great... More

This was our 5th visit to Mateo! We have also dined here with out of town friends and family. Great place for treating others to some of the best food Durham has to offer. Downstairs is a bit more lively and noisy, with tables very close to each other (on a previous visit our neighbors at the adjacent table offered... More

The flavors and textures of each dish are complex, intense and delicious. This is genuine Spanish tapas service in a lovely repurposed setting located in downtown Durham. Our server was outstanding and most helpful in navigating the menu and the room is very inviting. We had a spectacular dining experience.

Wow. I just dropped in this place with hunger and thirst. What a great find. Super nice staff and the food in absolutely delicious. The greens on the salad were picked perfect with the right amount of vinigarette dressing. The pork sandwich melted in my mouth and the Spanish beer was cold and crisp. If you are in downtown Durham... More

Tonight was my second trip to Mateo- and I have loved it both times. Such a fun and relaxing atmosphere- where you are encouraged to savor your meal a few small tapas plates at a time. The food was all superb. The butternut squash with harissa, honey, and a farmer's type cheese was to die for! The service was excellent-... More

First timers to this restaurant. Locals. This is a good one and you should try it!!! Reservations are recommended and preferred for dining. The bar is full service and walk ups I understand. We used OpenTable and visited on Christmas Eve - 2 early diners when they opened, 5pm. Seating location on the 1st floor dining is very snug and... More

When he posted on facebook that "Mateo in Durham NC is the best tapas bar in the US". FINALLY were able to try Mateo for our anniversary and we were not disappointed at all. The food, atmosphere, service and selection were all on point. We got there a little early so we had a couple drinks while we waited. The... More

Went here on a whim with some friends after an exhibit opening. I've always loved tapas and Mateo did not disappoint. Every dish was exceptional.

I finally got to try Mateo. We went for our anniversary, and it was worth the wait. I was apprehensive about the cost, having been to tapas places in the past and racking up charges left and right. The prices here, though, were reasonable. Downstairs, it’s a bit loud and lively. Luckily, we were seated upstairs. The chairs there were... More
