This may have been our favorite meal in Highlands. Our server Merrill was excellent. We ordered appetizers entrees and dessert and I don’t think anyone had anything left on their plates. Trout dishes were delicious, steak cooked just right, crab cakes were full of crab with little filler. Key lime pie, bread pudding and raspberry sorbet were definitely worth the extra calories! Servers were wearing masks and the tables were spaced apart but I could see how some might think they were not far enough apart. We did not feel uncomfortable. Very enjoyable evening.

20+ years, never been disappointed! Two generations of family have been visiting and enjoying Highlands for more than 20 years. We’ve never been disappointed in the service, food or ambience and rank Lakeside as one of our Top 5 favorite restaurants anywhere. Tonight it was my wife, 20 year old kids and I. If you’ve never been, understand Lakeside is not a big, glitzy restaurant. It’s more like being invited into someone’s home. The dining room holds maybe 80 people and is relatively cramped, but in an intimate, not uncomfortable way. I’ve never found the noise level to be close to loud. Service is personal and friendly but not obtrusive, cocktails are a generous pour and the food is simple but superb. Tonight our party had the Tomato Florentine soup and Shrimp Scampi appetizers which were fantastic. My filet au poive was perfectly done with a bit of char and a bright pink center. Tender and delicious with the au poive sauce. The Yukon gold potatoes were similarly simple but delicious and the rest of our party cleaned their plates of Haliibut, Seafood Pomadoro and Crab Cakes. We split the Mud Pie dessert which was similarly outstanding. Total bill for 4 was $225 which was just a complete value. Our server was attentive and friendly and it appeared all the other diners were enjoying their experience as well. Service, food and value are all outstanding, Lakeside closes after Jan 1 until spring, no doubt at all we’ll be back on our next visit for another exceptional meal.

There is no doubt, in my opinion, that this is the best restaurant in town. It should be rated #1 on trip advisor. A wonderful selection on the menu makes choosing hard. But you will be happy with whatever you choose. It is a very small room, so make reservations enough in advance. The food is spectacular and so is the service. I highly recommend the lamb chops which comes with great crispy roasted potatoes and excellent roasted Brussels sprouts. Also highly recommend the salmon creation. A delicious hot roll is also served right up front. Oh, and don’t miss the superb tomato soup. And save room for a great choice of delicious desserts. Overall wonderful experience.

So my wife and I were traveling to Highlands North Carolina to celebrate our 30th anniversary. We picked this restaurant because it had great reviews and we were looking forward to a special dinner as we don't usually go to very expensive restaurants. I'm pretty sure we had a reservation for 6:30 and the night we were supposed to go I got a call at 10 after 6 asking where we were. I immediately apologized and told them we would be there in two minutes which we were. When we got there there were several tables open but it was clear to my wife and I that the owner was very disgruntled with us for being late even though there were several tables still open. That set the tone for the night and then my wife and I split a meal because neither one of us can eat a giant meal and they didn't like that and charge the 7.50 split charge. We ordered drinks and the meal and we got the seafood pasta which the scallops were very good and the lobster was good but the shrimp were so tiny you could barely see them and in a $36 pasta dish the shrimp should be 21 to 35 not microscopic. The sauce also tasted like the sauce in a can of chef boyardee SpaghettiOs. They never came back to our table and asked if we wanted another drink they didn't ask if we wanted fresh ground pepper they just placed salt and pepper shakers on our table. Not something you would expect from a restaurant whose average dinner price is 28 and up. I can't tell you the next day we went to the old Edwards inn and ate lunch at the bar in the weingarten and had a fantastic meal which we split for no split charge and the service from the bartender was outstanding. we will be back to Highlands but we will definitely not be back to lakeside.

My wife and I came here for our 4 year anniversary dinner. The food was mediocre at best. The oysters and scallop appetizers were bland and not even warm. My wife’s pan seared steel head trout dish was bland and overcooked. I don’t even know what they were thinking with the creamed spinach. Gross. And the crab cakes weren’t crab cakes. They were deep fried crab balls. The worst I have ever had. And don’t expect to carry on a conversation. It’s so loud I had a headache by the time we left. $140 nightmare anniversary dinner. Soooo disappointed.

This little off-the-beaten-path restaurant in Highlands is a real gem! Great food and friendly service with very reasonable prices. The stuffed rainbow trout and grouper were both attractive and delicious and were priced much better than less dishes at other are restaurants. Our server, Mary, the Manager, Kelly, and the owner, Laura, all made us feel welcome and appreciated. This will definitely be our first stop for dinner on future trips the Highlands.

This was our first visit to Lakeside, but it won't be our last! My husband had the soy demi-glace grilled salmon, asparagus aux orange, and jasmine rice pilaf with coconut cream sauce. Everything was perfectly prepared and flavorful. I am vegan, so the chef prepared a delicious curried vegetable dinner for me, with 8 or 10 vegetables and a great sauce. I had the choice of Curry, Mediterranean, or Italian. We also had wine--good. Our server, Merrill was friendly, nice, and helpful. She made sure we had a pleasant experience and our food was as we liked it.

Pros: Excellent food, accommodating staff, beautiful setting outdoors, parking, good wine list, full bar, and no annoying music outdoors. Cons: None The Food and Drinks: We began our meal with an outstanding gin and tonic with lime. We ordered a bottle of Ferrari Carrano Fume Blanc for dinner, one of our favorite wines that is hard to find in restaurants. For starters we ordered the cornmeal dusted fried oysters and the pan seared scallops. Both dishes were five stars. The oysters were beautifully crispy on the outside and wonderfully soft on the inside. The relish, bacon, and vegetables complemented the oysters beautifully. The pan seared scallops were perfectly prepared—crispy on the outside, opaque on the inside. The scallop condiments complemented the dish beautifully. The two main courses for us were rainbow trout stuffed with crabmeat and wrapped in bacon and grouper Maison with artichoke hearts, cremini mushrooms, lemon & wine. The grouper was perfectly cooked and the portion was just right—not too small and not too big. The fish was tasty, moist, and the sides were great. The stuffed rainbow trout was also very tasty but a little dry, perhaps because the bacon had to be fully cooked. This was a serving of an entire trout. We skipped dessert. The Staff: We made our reservations weeks in advance because we were in Highlands during a major event. The front desk took our reservation and noted our request for outdoor seating. The day before our dinner the front desk called to confirm our reservation. We arrived early and the front person welcomed us warmly and graciously sat us at our outdoor table overlooking the lake while we waited for our friends to join us. The server was well informed and outgoing. She served our wine expertly, was knowledgeable about the food, and took care of our table without being intrusive. The pace of the meal was just right and courses arrived in a timely manner. We never felt rushed. Conclusion: The Lakeside Restaurant is a top dining destination for Highlands. We recommend it highly both for the food and the outdoor setting overlooking the lake.

We stumbled on this charming small restaurant just after sundown while walking off Main Street and luckily chose the garden for some wine and snacks. Sadly the inside dining room was way too packed and ignores any social distancing. But we loved our excellent wines and a delightful board of Whole Pecan Crusted Baked Brie with pear chutney, tarragon and raspberry. Our server, Mary, was first rate and all staff wear masks. It was great to relax with the evening sky reflected on the small Harris Lake in front with a backdrop of the wooded mountains. Memories of waterside restaurants in the Far East!

We had an early dinner reservation and were able to sit outside (ask for this when you make a reservation, we just got lucky that one table was not claimed). The weather was perfect and the scenery was nice. Kelly was our server and was attentive without being overbearing. Warm and friendly. The drinks were spot on! The food was good and well priced. The restaurant is also walkable from Old Edwards if you are staying there. Warning... the stuffed fish has its tail still on! Just so you know! :)

While dining at another Highlands restaurant I overheard the table next to us raving about Lakeside Restaurant. After figuring out where Lakeside was located my wife and I decided to give it a try. WOW, great decision! Easy reservation process (highly recommended) and confirmation by restaurant 24 hours prior to arrival. The restaurant is larger than it appears with spacious indoor seating along with outdoor dining. My wife had the strawberry and goat cheese salad and I had the roasted beets. Both were excellent. We had the steak frites and the short ribs. OMG! Both were delicious! We typically skip desert but decided based on how good our meal was that desert was a must try. Bread Pudding was fabulous. This was our first meal at Lakeside but it won’t be our last. Merrill was our waitress and she did an outstanding job helping us make decisions and took a lot of time with us to make our experience special.

Lakeside was just wonderful! We were first time visitors to Highlands, NC and this restaurant 100% makes coming back a top priority. Extremely amazing service in a beautifully unique dining room. Outdoor dining available as well. Every dish we ordered was incredible, though I have a feeling the tuna tartare nachos will be something I will dream about and crave. Until next time!

My wife and I enjoyed a great Lakeside carryout last night. We both had shrimp and grits and we think it was one of the best shrimp and grits we've ever had. I had the wedge as my salad. it was very large and crisp and the dressing was perfect. My wife had the beat salad and enjoyed it as well. We love the Lakeside and the entire team. Please give them shout soon.

OMG! We dined at Lakeside while we were in Highlands this past weekend. What an absolute delight. We had the the Tuna Tartar nachos and we were blown away! My husband said he has never had Duck that was that flavorful. I had the butter poached lobster and the clover profile was Devine!! This place is a gem off the beaten path. We happened to get lucky that another family had an emergency and gave up there reservation. That staff was just wonderful. The wine “Cakebread Chardonnay “ was perfectly chilled and the sever was sure to keep the glasses poured. Sadly, we had no room for desert, but those around us were exclaiming their delight. The atmosphere is light and happy. It was just wonderful. We cant wait to go back. We look forward to an opportunity to dine in the lively garden!!
