As the nice spot Alert Bay has not a lot of restaurants plus very limited opening hours we were forced to go there for our first breakfast. Also because our acomodation did not offer any food.
The service was totally unfriendly, the place (especiallly washrooms)...is not tidy. The breakfast as such didn‘t taste at all, far too oily, no toast had been delivered, although on the menu.
Reco: go to the well equipped and friendly grocery store and prepare your own breakfast, lunch and dinner. Better choice.More
It was the only place open when we arrived. The service was questionable. We had chicken teriyaki Caesar salad which was an odd combination to say the least. As it was the only option we had lunch the next day as well and the service...was worst. The food was below average. If possible skip this place.More
The small island of Alert Bay has very few food stops. We enjoyed popping into the Bayside after a tour to get some hot food. We were happy and surprised to find indian food on the small island. We both enjoyed our main dishes and...stuffed ourselves further with fries after.More
We were the first people in, the first to order. Four other groups came later, ordered later and were all served before us. Our order had been mistakenly given another. The owner and server were apologetic and eventually brought my dish, then a few minutes...later my wife's. Famished, we finished them off. I then remembered I'd ordered the tandoori chicken but had been brought a heavily sauced chicken instead, a different colour than the butter. The owner explained they don't have a tandoori over, so I said they should not be offering "tandoori chicken" but "chicken in a tandoori masala sauce" which he admitted it was. He insisted he can call his dishes whatever he wants and no-one had ever objected before. I rejected that as dishonest. After this wholly dissatisfying experience I suggested he charge us only for the dish we ordered and not the one he mis-represented. He grew angry and ordered me out immediately, declaring loudly that I only wanted to be eating for free. So I left without paying anything, by his choice. I don't recommend this place tho the food didn't taste bad. The sauces were thick and rich, which I wanted to avoid by ordering the tandoori chicken. Adding the word "massala" to the chicken entry would at least make it honest. Sorry to this because I'd normally want to support a family struggling to make a go of a restaurant with an adventurous cuisine.More
We decided to order curry. When the dishes arrived one was a vivid pink, only possible from lots of food dye and the other bright orange. The sauce was thick and gloppy and tasted of cornflour. The rice and the naan breads were ok as...was the beer from the pub next door. The couple who run the place were friendly enough but really should not be offering this kind of food.More
We visited the Bayside Grill one Monday evening in June, because it was the only place open in the entire town! Before coming we were told it is what you would consider a 'greasy spoon' diner. We were fine with this as we had been...traveling for a while and nothing else was open.
We walked in and they place was empty. We waited 5-10 mins without seeing anyone, went to the bar connected next door to enquire if the restaurant was open. They confirmed they were. We returned and had to shout to the back of the kitchen a couple of times, before the proprietor showed up.
Once seated we were asked if we would like a drink or beer. We indicated we would, and were told to go to the bar next door to get the drinks and that they would add it to our tab!
The menu was the typical diner menu, but also had a small selection of East Indian dishes. Given the proprietors appeared to be middle eastern, we thought it would be best to order off that side of the menu. Nope! The butter chicken was literally 1/3 tomato sauce, 1/3 butter, and 1/3 heavy cream, with ZERO spice or flavour. The curried chickpea dish was minestrone soup base, with canned Chickpeas!!!
Bottom line, not recommended. We are certain that anywhere else in town would be much better.More
This place looks like an ordinary restaurant/grill and when you go in it takes you back in time to the 70's. But the owner of this establishment is from India and has put some of her ethnic foods on the menu. While the menu has...what you would expect to find in a diner, it also has these lovely options. Our curry meal was really tasty. They are big portions and so we were glad we shared one dish between us.More
