The Barn is a wonderful place to buy a great cup up coffee and treat yourself to an amazing pastry. We enjoyed the best blackberry scone we have ever eaten. With a barista behind the counter you can have your coffee the way you like it. There are little two and four seat areas to have a quiet moment to yourself or spend time with friends. As masks are currently mandatory, and all staff were wearing them as well, we felt perfectly safe sitting inside. The smell of coffee and baking are wonderful and the rustic atmosphere of the building blend perfectly in Mahone Bay. I highly recommend The Barn and will definitely be visiting again.

Breakfast with friends. In converting this old barn to an eatery, the owners preserved the building's charm. Great, cozy atmosphere. People seemed to be definitely accepting the invitation to hang out for as long as they wanted. We ate up in the hayloft - very nice. My rating given for the ambiance, not the food. Coffee was good. Baked goods for breakfast - OK.

For the staff working Sunday Nov 27 in Mahone Bay you are amazing, so kind and speedy. Amazing atmosphere perfect for a chilly day to feel cozy, tops off to the owners for keeping such a wonderful atmosphere and charm to the building. This is a must go spot if you’re visiting Mahone Bay, seriously wonderful, staff is so accommodating, lots of seating, lots of dietary options for people with restrictions. Wish I said an extra thank you to the staff today for being so helpful! 11/10 business all around wish I could give 10 stars.

A few days ago we met with friends at The Barn. I ordered and paid for a tea and biscuit. While the biscuit arrived to my seat, the tea did not. I waited. After what seemed like a fair bit of time to make tea I inquired about my order. The baristas didn't recall my order, even challenging me that it had been placed. A man holding a coffee and standing at the back of the café spoke up and said that it had been ordered. I didn't know he was the owner. No apology was given.
The barista said she would get me my tea after she served customers at the counter. I returned to my seat a little exasperated as this was not the first time that I had experienced poor service at this business, but never complained. I looked at my friends, shook my head and said 'millennials'.
The man holding the coffee glowered at me but said nothing. I then turned to my friend and said something to her in a low voice. The man stepped towards us and demanded that I repeat to him what I whispered to my friend. I told him I was talking to my friend, not him. I still didn't know he was the owner. He told me that he heard what I said (yet my friend had to ask me to repeat as she didn't) and said that the whole room heard what I said. That was impossible.
The owner must have a bad conscience, fearing I said something negative because he used that as a provocation to chew me out in front of the whole café. He said he didn't appreciate my coming in to his business complaining about the service, etc. etc. even though he clearly saw that it was faulty.
I was appalled, got up and left in disgust and will never return. Nor will my friends, who have been loyal customers to this business since day one, and who were deeply embarrassed.
When does a mild criticism of poor service turn in to the public humiliation of a customer?
Why didn't the owner apologize and jump in to make his customer happy?
This owner was right out of line.
By the way, the oat biscuit was very small, overpriced, tasteless and stodgy.

Your objectivity and self-other understanding here is low. We have very large hearts for the anxiety and hurt people are experiencing in the world right now. But will never tolerate someone trying to shame and berate people based on their age and the simple fact they made a mistake on an order. Have you ever made a mistake? You were disruptive, disrespectful and offensive. You are self important and have anger issues. The girls were shaken. The other customers applauded when you left. Your friends apologized profusely for your terrible behaviour. They messaged me again today. Your experience about the service is contravened by thousands of statements to the contrary. You yelled loudly for everyone to hear. But you know this. You said in your review you were here “a few days ago,” but of course you were here yesterday. You were hoping people didn’t connect the dots that it was you. You sent me a private message with your review saying “Welcome to Nova Scotia.” I’m actually from Nova Scotia but again your desire to hurt others was revealed - apparently you don’t like outsiders. The youngest millennial is actually 28 as of today which is older than any of our staff and tells me you’ve been using this as a slur for a long time. Do not come back. Ever. Unless you would like to apologize to each of the young, confident, strong, intelligent young women who work here. Doing this on the second day back being open from the global pandemic was particularly mind numbing where every one is doing their best to serve people, make things work, and make them feel like things are returning to normal. You also forgot your tea.

First let me start by saying that I love The Barn. I love their coffee, I love their treats, and their staff. After a long while away (I haven't been in since pre-pandemic), I was shocked when I walked in the door today and very little has changed in the layout. It was like walking into pre-pandemic times. It looked to me like it always has. I'm not saying there hasn't been a major changes but to my naked eye it is certainly not enough. Other than a glass barrier at the cash and separate Entrance and Exit doors very little has changed. As soon as we walked in we had to walk directly past (very close) a table of people (who are sitting down so they are not wearing masks). Seats that would be quite easy to remove without losing business still take up space. While waiting in line we had to wait right next to a man sitting at a bar stool eating and drinking his coffee (there are several stools right next to the line up). Although there are arrows to get your coffee there is no clear path to exit the building without either walking back past the line / or directly through people enjoying a chat and a coffee. Bulky shelving and furniture still takes up a lot of space on the main floor and should really be removed / replaced with smaller pieces for the time being to allow for social distancing and better flow through the cafe. As someone who is high-risk I was extremely disappointed and saddened. I know our cases are low here but it's still a pandemic. Unless we hear of some positive changes in the very near future we will be getting our coffee elsewhere.

Always warm and friendly coming into The Barn and always worth a trip in from the city. My friend and I got drinks and Breakfast pastry (bacon, scallion, gruyere), and the lemon berry muffins.
The pastry was excellent and might have used a tough of sauce or something, only cause it was almost like a breakfast sandwich, or just a touch of warm butter cut into the center. Was amazing still though. The lemon berry muffin was bursting with flavor with berries that tasted like they were just picked out of the garden that morning. Its a close contender to the incredible apple muffins they make late summer to early fall.
Full as we were we couldn't help getting more treats on the way out the door. I grabbed the quiche with bacon, cheese and chives and the maple blueberry (vegan) scone on the way out. The quiche is top tier amazing, the eggs in it are soft and fluffy, the bacon cooked to perfection. The scone, it didn't matter that it was vegan, just as the staff told me, it knocked it out of the park! lots of fresh blueberries and a pure maple taste and a oatmeal type crumble on type. Its almost unfair to other places they are this good!! lol Very talented bakers, hope they hang onto them!

It’s a coffee place. For young people. We had a dog, so wanted to sit outside, tables and seats were wet. I know it’s October, but if you have outdoor seating, make it useable. It wasn’t busy, so there was time to wipe the tables and chairs outside amped to replace the paper towel in the washroom. A garbage can outside would encourage people to put things in the garbage instead of leaving on the table. I make an extra effort to use independent coffee shops, but I can see why people go to Tim Hortons, as there are minimum standards that are always met.

We are in no sense whatsoever a place for young people only as evidenced by the many wonderful people of all ages who come through our doors everyday! With all of our patrons who are the true lovers of independent coffee shops, we have a wonderful relationship where we would do just about anything for a customer who takes a moment to communicate a need. All the best.

In the middle of a pandemic affecting small businesses we try to support local business. Coffee and pastries were good and all staff were masked and social distancing was being followed. Then a tall guy that appeared to work there as possibly owner or manager came in making his own food behind the counter with bandana mask off and randomly singing then strolled through the entire cafe with his mask off. Given this cavalier attitude I am not confident that all measures are really being taken by this business during the pandemic to keep customers safe. It is disappointing to see.

Hi Heather, I don’t remember this but concede the point 100% and will do better in the future. The singing however will continue. Thanks for supporting local!!

This is a lovely spot for a visit when you are in Mahone Bay. Excellent espresso drinks (hot and cold). Local treats and often soup is on. The atmosphere is one of warmth and caring as the staff really treat you like family. Very kid-friendly (play space upstairs) I highly recommend a visit.

A quaint spot with a great ambiance, a nice place to stop for a coffee, they have great baked goods and excellent coffee. Best flat white I’ve had outside of New Zealand. There is lots of parking in town by the ocean front a short walk away or street parking out front.

Such a cute and friendly spot! Great local flavor. Cinnamon buns, scones and muffins all delicious. Happy to pull up a chair next to others to have tea and coffee and chat. Beautiful decor. Small but a fun stop.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE BRIDGEWATER NS LOCATION. I was there at around noon recently. My brother ordered a sandwich. When I went to order (5 Minutes later), the woman behind the counter was making coffee for another customer and they were gabbing. She took a long time to make the other customer's coffee. After I waited 10 minutes for her to serve me, she told me that her coworker was leaving for the day and they couldn’t serve food for the rest of the day. What a joke! Unbelievable! They're supposed to be open for lunch. I’ll certainly never be back there. Turns out it was a blessing in disguise because my brother got his sandwich and it was small and looked very unappetizing. We went Fancy Pants, another cafe a few minutes away. I highly. recommend Fancy Pants.
