Having coffee in a French press is the best. Back to the Grind does it. So good! They have a nice selection of tea as well (Pluck), like the Control Alt Delete. Fun name for a tea that energizes without making you jittery.

I always like to sample independent bistros and cafes when traveling though smaller centres, and Back to the Grind caught my eye. Located downtown, travelers passing through Kap will need to take a slight detour off the main highway to get this place as it...is located in "the circle", a downtown roundabout that serves as Kapuskasing's shopping and service area. The building is non-descript and an understated sign announces Back to the Grind as "a jazzy little bistro". Upon entering, one is greeted with standard coffee house chic decor; wooden floors, menus on overhead blackboards and so on. The atmosphere is bright and airy and I noted at least a couple of patrons who had set up shop with their laptops doing whatever it is people like that do on laptops in coffee houses. I ordered at the counter - soup and a tuna melt sandwich. The soup was served immediately, but then there was a 21 minute interval until the tuna melt arrived. (Actually it was longer, as it was only once I got impatient that I started my stopwatch). I wasn't sure if they forgot my order, or maybe I was supposed to pick it up at the counter? No one came to tell me what was up one way or the other, and I had finished my soup long ago, so I finally went to go see what happened with my sandwich. It was right at that moment that a server brought it out from the kitchen. After a little confusion about who would carry my sandwich to my table, I awkwardly led the sandwich bearing server to where I was seated, sat down, and received the remainder of my meal. The melt arrived with commercial nacho chips, what appeared to me to be store bought salsa, and a pickle. Burned black on the edges and with pan fried cheese stuck to it, it was unattractive and not something that I would ever expect to be served to a customer. I elected not to make an issue of it, as I needed to get back on the highway and I had already spent longer than I had planned, waiting for my sandwich. I would hope this poor product was a one-off, and from the other reviews here I am thinking I just maybe got them on a bad day. I don't know... Washrooms were spotless. And I've often found that "clean washroom = clean kitchen". The kitchen is partially open to the restaurant, and I rubbernecked to check it out further and was pleased with what I saw in that regard. Next time I am passing through Kap, I will perhaps give them another try. However, based on my single experience it is my opinion that they will have to up their food prep game to remain a player.More

Got stuck in Kapuskasing due to a collision with a Moose, and had a loaner vehicle so we able to explore. Found this place, it had been recommended by the hotel staff as a nice place for lunch. Which it was, after we figured out...how to it worked. When we walked in we were not sure if it was table service or order and sit. A nice young woman (a friend of the cook) realized that we were confused came over to the table where we had sat down at and gave us menus and told us the procedure. Also the menu was on a chalkboard, which confused us even more. Both my husband and I ordered the Club House Sandwich. I ordered it with a House Coffee and he with a Ginger Ale. The sandwiches were on multigrain toasted bread and the turkey or chicken was warmed. Instead of mayonnaise, they used Ranch Dressing which was an nice touch. Served with plan tacos chips and salsa. The salsa, I am sure was a bottled type but it was of a good quality one. I think the the meat had been warmed in a Microwave as it appeared that there was very limited space in the kitchen area . They did offer a soup, because it was at the other end of the order area, I did not see it or I may of ordered some soup. It looked like a local favorite, sitting was normally set-up for groups of four. Would go back if the occasion was to arise.More

While visiting Kap we stopped in to Back to the Grind for a coffee and snack, however it was closing time. Pamela (great name by the way) served us our beverages and made our food anyhow. It was delivered to our table fresh, hot and...with a smile. That was above and beyond , excellent customer service . Kitchener ONTMore
