Originally booked to camp here for 4 nights late July but extended to 5 and it was a shame to move on. Warm welcome from Mark and Sharon who were very good hosts.
Small garden area to pitch tents and 2 pods available too with no frills at a very reasonable price if you prefer to keep your tent dry. Served by a wet room with single shower, WC and wash basin. Parking was never an issue and there is also a large free car park directly across the road.
Range of breakfast options available depending on your appetite with times negotiable but usually served from around 8:30AM. Choice of meals throughout the day listed on the blackboard with the occasional special. Everything was reasonably priced. Of special note was Sharon's effort to stop us from being homesick by doing us a "Teesside hot-shot parmo" one night! We also had car problems one night meaning that we didn't get back to the pub until almost midnight. Mark agreed to plate us some meals that he reheated when we arrived and kept the bar open to allow us to have a few pints before bed. Mark offered to help us recover a stranded car that wasn't required but nevertheless was a fantastic offer and directed us to a local garage for repairs advice. It was nice to feel that you had help and support if required and it was very much appreciated.
The pub sits on the Wainwright Coast to Coast route and they are geared up to help walkers and cyclists. They offer a laundry service. Mark's pride and joy is the pub fire which burns 24/7 and is put to good use helping to dry tents and boots.
Locals using the pub were very friendly and helpful too. COVID restrictions have made it a very challenging time for pubs but Mark and Sharon deserve to succeed and I wish them all the best.

We came camping for 4 nights. Booking was easy and Sharon answered promptly to my questions. A thing to note that this is a pub garden offering basic camping. No electric hook up and no hot water except the shower. There is one toilet and one shower. The garden is best suited to walkers and cyclists with small tents. Our 4 man tent took up a third of the space. A laundry service is offered.
We had a hearty breakfast each morning and Sharon does the cooking, she can tailor make your breakfast. Mark is a good host. He can be found in the bar at most times. Food is available throughout the day. Close to Penrith, Pooley Bridge, Keswick and Kendal but the whole of the Lakes are close enough for a day trip and Sharon can supply a packed lunch if you want one.

We came here one night for something to eat whilst staying in shap. The owners were really friendly and welcoming they followed the government guidelines (took our contact details and our temperatures) they had there special on little black boards on the bar which was cute I think there was about 5 or 6 of them. I went for the beef stew with dumplings, the beer was really good. We decided to sit down by the fire the pub had a cosy warm atmosphere to it. When our food came it was a decent size. It was nice and hot and really tasty definitely filled me up, so I would really recommend the beef stew! We will definitely be visiting this pub again if we’re in the area

We arrived in Shap for a late lunch and went looking for somewhere. The sign outside the Crown Inn advertised that food was being served. So we went in.
Inside rather dingy, with a handwritten sign on the wall advising that there is a charge for tap water and for charging electrical items.
My daughter asked if we could get lunch, only to be told that the kitchen was closed ‘because my wife is too busy’.
So why the sign outside advertising food? And why could they not organise food service?
Overall: scruffy, unfriendly, mean and poor service. There are far better places in Shap. Avoid this one.

Yes, there is a sign on the wall ( NOT hand written) for tap water & electrical charge, this is because some people think they can just come into our premises and have a pint of water and sit and charge their battery packs, phones etc. The reason we charge for this, is that we pay a higher rate for all services!!!!!!!!!!!! As for the wife being busy (that is the wife who is replying to this) I was busy, as I was preparing a buffet for 40 people and I am the only person who does the catering. Very sorry for any inconvenience.

Guess if you rely on passing trade with low likelihood of a return visit you need make no effort at all and that is clearly the approach taken here. Orange juice and lemonade ordered; 50:50 orange squash and room temperature tap water delivered. Suggest you get some cans from the co-op if you want a refreshing drink. Place was as unwelcoming as it is possible to make it. Maybe we just had an off-day but the barman did not give the impression he gave a damn. Not cheap either!

I was doing a long distance walk and just turned up on the off chance, to pitch a tent for a few nights and Mark the landlord said no problem, although its obviously better to pre-book to be sure. A lucky break as the Crown proved to be an unexpectedly pleasant surprise.
Only a small camping area, but very reasonably priced and a good shower and toilet facility adjacent. Also 2 small "Hobbit pods" which would be great if raining and you didn't want to get your tent wet.
There is a good selection of beers and Mark takes a pride in looking after them and serving a good pint.
I visited during Covid, so the menu was limited and basic, but good quality (better chips than the award winning chippy down the road!) and very reasonably priced. The all day breakfast will certainly keep you going!
Mark and Sharon can't do enough to make you welcome and be helpfull. Mark went out of his way to help me out when I had transport difficulties for example.
Early breakfast is available if you want it, as is a packed lunch.
They also provide an overnight laundry service, which could be a gift for long distance walkers.
You should definately consider the Crown if you are doing the Coast to Coast or just passing through as you can't really fault it.

Me and a colleague had our 10tonne van breakdown just outside the Crown Inn at Shap Village. All I can say is, the food was excellent, the chips and burger were much needed! The establishment is run by a husband and wife and they are really accommodating and super friendly. We then left the property and came back a few hours later while still stranded with a broken van, in near freezing weather, and they allowed us to come in for a few minutes to Warm up in front of their fire. Sooo nice and much needed!
If you're ever in the area, I recommend popping in for a meal or a chat as this place is a diamond and would be a shame to disappear due to covid restrictions.
I'll come back for a game pool next time as we couldn't play due to covid yesterday!
Thanks from Barry and Chris

Ive stayed with Mark and Sharon at the Crown Inn three times during 2022 and always been given the warmest of welcomes.
Being allowed to use the car park to base my camper van whist I walked many circuits of Wainwrights Outlying Fells the evenings were spent in the warm cosy pub enjoying wholesome food and the best of craft beers both served with a cheery smile and plenty of banter.
Wether you are doing the C2C, using it as a base like me or simply passing through Shap I highly recommend a visit.
I hope Sharon’s hands have recovered from the surgery and would like to wish you both all the best in the future.
Peter.

I unexpectedly spent 4 months in Shap. On my first visit to Crown Inn I was warmly welcomed not only by Mark and Sharon but also by the locals seated about at the time. All were open and friendly. They all shared the "Small Town" values I am so familiar with, living in rural Yukon, Canada. This set of values was repeated throughout most of the establishments I visited within Shap. This atmosphere combined with the fine food , the beverages crossing the bar, and the list of amenities offered to travelers , tenting, sleeping pods, covered semi enclosed gazebo, laundry services, showers( Fine Folk attract Fine Folk) is what has earned such fine ratings. I will certainly miss Crown Inn and it's Patrons. Visit, Relax, and Enjoy! Fine Folks attract Fine Folks.

I stayed here whilst walking the Coast to Coast.
The pub has two camping pods and a small flat grassed area for tents.
The pub is run by Mark and Sharon who are both brilliant. The beer is good and well priced and the food is all homemade with generous portions.
I can’t recommend this pub highly enough.

On a typical Lake District evening what are you looking for in a pub?
This certainly hit the spot … a roaring log burner, a warm welcome with a mix of locals and visitors, good beer and excellent food - tasty, good quality and hearty portions.
Travelling alone you always end up talking to those around you and they were similarly enjoying the beer and the food.
It’s certainly dog friendly too with water bowls and towels to dry them when you arrive … before they hog the log burner.
I gather this has been newly taken on by a family and I wish them well. Certainly I hope it thrives so I can return whenever I am breaking my journey at Shap - which is v convenient just off the M6.

Wow what can we say such a lovely quaint local type pub, wished we lived nearer to have it as our local. We visited a few times through the week for drinks and was made to feel so welcomed by staff and the locals. Danielle the landlady was so lovely she as only had the pub a few weeks but you wouldn't have known. All the food (though we didn't get round to eating there) was home cooked, she seemed also to support locals buying their products to cook with. Elisha the bar maid was so lovely and we had some fantastic conversations with her and it felt like talking to family members when talking to them both. We will definitely be visiting again next year and will definitely try that lovely homemade food. Prices of drinks and food was reasonable. This pub is a must to visit if in or passing through Shap. Thank you Danielle and Elisha for making us feel so welcome. Good luck for the future.

I arrived in Shap after a long day in the saddle and was looking for somewhere to pitch my tent. I noticed the pub offered camping so I popped inside to a very warm welcome .. and the wonderful aroma of home cooked food. The deal was done - I wasn't pedalling anywhere else tonight. There was a small patch of grass to pitch on but I also noticed some quirky pods so I did a quick upgrade which was a great choice when torrential rain arrived at 4.30am.
Once I'd made myself (a bit) more presentable I didn't need to go anywhere else to eat since the menu had ample choice. It didn't take long to make my choice which was finished off with a well earned dessert. It was all great food, home made and plenty of it at great value too.
The hosts were lovely and very obliging - I will definitely recommend. Thank you 😊.
